NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Sophie Leclerc, Julie
Fortier, Kelsey Cone and Melissa Rundlett all scored goals, and
Cindy Fortin made 20 saves in the Cadets' goal to lead the Norwich
University women's ice hockey team to a 4-2 victory over Southern
Maine in an ECAC East contest Saturday afternoon at Kreitzberg
Arena.
Norwich (3-3-0, 3-1-0 ECAC East) opened the scoring midway
through the opening stanza as Leclerc scored an unassisted
short-handed goal at 9:25 of the first period. The Cadets outshot
the Huskies, 8-5, in the first period, but they settled for a 1-0
lead after 20 minutes.
Southern Maine (2-1-0, 2-1-0 ECAC East) tied the score at 1-1
early in the second frame as Kylie Blasen scored a power play goal
off an assist from Danielle Ward at 3:32 of the period. Norwich
recaptured the lead with 4:40 to play in the second period as
Fortier scored an unassisted goal. USM tied it up at 2-2 as just 48
seconds later Blasen netted her second goal of the contest.
Cone capped an exciting second period as she scored a power play
goal off an assist from Amanda Wilks with only 36 seconds to play
in the stanza.
Rundlett capped the scoring just 4:12 into the third period as
she netted a power-play marker off assists from Felicia Desorcie
and Wilks.
Fortin turned aside 20 of the 22 shots that she faced en route
to the victory. USM goaltender Kristen Gresko made 18 saves in the
losing effort.
Norwich and Southern Maine each attempted 22 shots in the
contest. NU went 2-for-8 on the power play, while USM was 1-for-7
on the man-advantage.
Norwich returns to action on Friday, Nov. 21, when the Cadets
travel to Worcester, Mass., to tangle with ECAC East foe Holy
Cross. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m.
