Women's Ice Hockey: Norwich Trounces Plymouth State, 9-0

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Sophie Leclerc netted a hat trick, Amanda Wilks scored two goals and Julie Fortier registered five assists to lead the Norwich University women's ice hockey team past ECAC East rival Plymouth State University, 9-0, Friday evening at Kreitzberg Arena.

It marked the second straight win for the Cadets, who improve to 2-3-0 (2-1-0 ECAC East). The Panthers, meanwhile, slip to 0-1-0 (0-1-0 ECAC East).

Norwich opened the scoring less than three minutes into the first period when Leclerc scored off an assist from Fortier at 2:56. Four minutes later, the Cadets made it 2-0 as Wilks scored a power play goal at 6:55 of the first. Leclerc and Fortier were credited with assists on the play.

Leclerc tallied her second marker of the period at 14:22 of the first off assists from Fortier and Kelsey Cone. Freshman Melissa Rundlett rounded out the first period scoring at 17:42 of the period when she took a feed from classmate Danielle Del Dotto and scored at 17:42.

Norwich completely dominated the first period, outshooting the Panthers, 23-1.

The Cadets continued their offensive onslaught in the second period, scoring two more goals to increase their lead to 6-0 following 40 minutes. Wilks got the offense going at 3:07 of the second, netting her second goal of the contest off assists from Emily Goff and Suzanne Whitaker. Then, at 16:12 of the second period, Cone scored off assists from Fortier and Whitaker.

Leclerc completed her hat trick midway through the final frame when she scored off an assist from Fortier at 9:02 of the third period. Sarah Scardino tallied an unassisted goal at 14:24 to increase NU's lead to 8-0. Whitaker closed out the scoring at 18:10 of the third off assists from Ashley Cassan and Felicia DeSorcie.

For the game, Norwich outshot Plymouth State 62-12. The Cadets were 1-for-6 on the power play, while the Panthers went 0-for-5 on the man-advantage.

Norwich freshman goaltender Chiara Traversa stopped all 12 shots that she faced en route to her first career shutout.

Norwich returns to the ice at Kreitzberg Arena on Saturday, Nov. 15, when the Cadets host ECAC East rival Southern Maine. Faceoff is slated for 3 p.m.
