RUTLAND, Vt. - Norwich scored two goals in the
final five minutes of regulation to forge a 2-2 tie with Castleton
State in women's ice hockey action on Sunday afternoon. With the
tie, the Cadets' record now stands at 2-0-1 (1-0-1 ECAC East). The
Spartans, meanwhile, move to 1-2-2 (0-0-2).
Castleton jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first period on
Katelyn Greeene's first goal of the season at 10:51. The Spartans
tacked on another goal less than two minutes into the second period
to establish a 2-0 lead.
Castleton appeared to be headed to its first conference win of
the season until Norwich's Kelsey Cone cut the lead to one with a
little more than four minutes remaining in the contest off assists
from Sophie Leclerc and Juanita Benavides. Then, with just 2:27
remaining in regulation, Leclerc score the equalizer, with a power
play goal. Cone and Danielle LaSpina were credited with assists.
The Spartans tested Norwich goalie, Cindy Fortin 13 times in the
final period but could not find the back of the net. Each team
mustered a pair of shots in overtime, but both goalies turned them
away.
Fortin ended the contest with 31 saves.
The Cadets return to the friendly confines of Kreitzberg Arena
on Saturday, Dec. 1, when they host UMass-Boston at 7 p.m.
