KINGS POINT, N.Y. - The Norwich University football team opened New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon, falling to the United States Merchant Marine Academy, 44-9, at Brooks Stadium.
Merchant Marine built its advantage behind a relentless rushing attack, scoring six touchdowns on the ground and piling up 321 rushing yards on 57 attempts. Norwich continued to battle through the fourth quarter, however, breaking through with a safety before following with a 53-yard touchdown drive to account for all nine Cadet points.
The Mariners wasted little time establishing the tempo, covering 75 yards in six plays on the opening possession. Sonny Endicott broke loose for 32 yards during the march before Bubba Mustain finished the drive with a three-yard touchdown run, putting Merchant Marine ahead, 7-0, less than three minutes into the afternoon.
Norwich's defense settled in on the next Merchant Marine possession, forcing the hosts to punt after John Dixner (Fenton, Mich.) dropped Harrison Garrido for a five-yard loss. Field position quickly turned against the Cadets, though, after the punt pinned Norwich at its own 10.
Three plays later, Merchant Marine blocked Norwich's punt at the four-yard line, with the loose ball ultimately resulting in a safety to extend the margin to 9-0 with 5:32 remaining in the opening quarter.
Norwich found favorable field position later in the period after another Mariner punt gave the Cadets possession at the Merchant Marine 44.  Will Patenaude (Goffstown, N.H.) opened the series with an eight-yard run, but the Mariners stopped Norwich on fourth down at their own 38 to end the threat.
Merchant Marine added to its lead early in the second quarter, finishing an eight-play, 62-yard drive with a 13-yard touchdown run from Endicott. The Mariners struck again less than four minutes later, using a 33-yard completion to move inside the Norwich five before Mustain scored from four yards out, stretching the margin to 23-0.
The Cadet defense created its biggest first-half opportunity midway through the second.
After Merchant Marine took possession near midfield, Tank Jemison (Ardmore, Pa.) forced a fumble on the opening play of the drive, and Somto Ndukwe (West Orange, N.J.) recovered the loose ball at the Mariner 45 to hand Norwich possession in plus territory. The Cadets were unable to capitalize, however, eventually punting the ball back inside the Merchant Marine five.
The Mariners responded with their longest drive of the half, marching 95 yards across 12 plays and consuming more than five minutes before Endicott scored from six yards out with 1:14 remaining, sending Merchant Marine into halftime with a 30-0 advantage.Â
Norwich mounted its best offensive movement of the opening half in the final minute.  Landon Beecher (Holliston, Mass.) connected with Jahmir Dixon (Philadelphia, Pa.) for 14 yards, with a Merchant Marine personal foul adding another 15, before Beecher scrambled for 11 more to move the Cadets to the Mariner 35.
Norwich reached the Merchant Marine 31 before the hosts intercepted a pass on the final play of the half, stopping the late push.
Merchant Marine resumed control after the break. Mustain finished a five-play, 63-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter, and Will Surdez later capped a nine-play, 50-yard possession with a four-yard score to make it 44-0 with 3:45 remaining in the period.
The Cadets continued to compete and finally broke through early in the fourth quarter.
After Caleb Laisch (Alexandria, Va.) unloaded a 70-yard punt that pinned Merchant Marine at its own two-yard line, Ndukwe burst through on the very next play and dropped quarterback Alexander Hackwelder in the end zone for a two-yard sack and safety. The play put Norwich on the board at 44-2 with 13:45 remaining.
Norwich immediately followed with its strongest offensive series of the afternoon.
Beginning from its own 47 following the ensuing free kick, Beecher connected with Fionn Parker-Cummings (Bangor, Maine) for 24 yards to move the Cadets across midfield. Facing fourth-and-15 later in the drive, Beecher found Connor McFarland (Manchester, N.H.) for 17 yards to keep the possession alive.
Beecher then went back to Parker-Cummings for 13 more, moving Norwich down to the Merchant Marine four before finding Anderson Guerrero (Boston, Mass.) in the end zone for a four-yard touchdown.  Zack Zegarra (Ridgewood, N.J.) added the extra point to finish the seven-play, 53-yard drive and make it 44-9 with 10:33 remaining.
Norwich threatened once more later in the quarter after taking over at the Merchant Marine 44. Parker-Cummings opened the drive with an 11-yard reception, and Beecher later found Cameron Sousa (Saugerties, N.Y.) for 10 yards on fourth-and-11, leaving the Cadets just short of extending the possession as Merchant Marine took over at its own 24.
Beecher finished the afternoon 16-of-30 through the air for 133 yards and one touchdown. Parker-Cummings led Norwich with five receptions for 54 yards, while McFarland added three catches for 25 yards. Dixon finished with two receptions for 18 yards, while Patenaude caught two passes and carried the ball nine times.
Defensively, Corey Stone (Piscataway, N.J.) paced Norwich with a game-high 11 total tackles, including eight solo stops, while Jack Daley (Weymouth, Mass.) added eight. Jemison finished with seven tackles and a forced fumble, while Nick Costa (Lynn, Mass.) recorded six.
Ndukwe turned in one of Norwich's most impactful defensive performances, finishing with four tackles, a sack, a tackle for loss, a fumble recovery, and the fourth-quarter safety.  Aidan Hamilton (West Boylston, Mass.) and Austin McCormick (North Grafton, Mass.) also totaled four tackles apiece, with Hamilton adding a tackle for loss.
Laisch was called upon frequently in the punting game and finished with eight punts for 257 yards, placing two inside the 20-yard line and booming a career-long 70-yarder that directly set up Norwich's safety.
Merchant Marine finished with 433 yards of total offense, including 321 on the ground, and converted all six of its red-zone opportunities into touchdowns. Norwich totaled 154 yards of offense, with 137 coming through the air.
The Cadets will continue their three-game road swing and remain in NEWMAC play next Saturday, Oct. 3, traveling to Worcester Polytechnic Institute for a 12:00 p.m. kickoff in Worcester, Mass.
Norwich will then step back out of conference action on Saturday, Oct. 10, traveling to Maine Maritime Academy for another 12:00 p.m. contest.
