WORCESTER, Mass. - The Norwich University football team continued New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon, falling to Worcester Polytechnic Institute, 45-19, at H. Carr Field.
Norwich found itself chasing the game almost immediately after WPI returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown, but the Cadets responded with a pair of sustained first-half scoring drives to pull within a single point. The Engineers eventually created separation behind several explosive plays, including two special-teams touchdowns, before Norwich answered with a touchdown in each of the final two quarters.
WPI struck just 12 seconds into the afternoon when Jeff Quigley returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown, giving the Engineers an immediate 7-0 advantage.
Norwich answered by moving the ball effectively on its first possession.  Landon Beecher (Holliston, Mass.) connected with Jahmir Dixon (Philadelphia, Pa.) for six yards before finding him again for a 41-yard gain that pushed the Cadets deep into WPI territory.
The drive ultimately stalled at the Engineers' 31, but Norwich's defense quickly gave the offense another opportunity by producing a fourth-down stop.  Jack Daley (Weymouth, Mass.) dropped Josh Macomber for a one-yard loss on fourth-and-one at the Norwich 40 to return possession to the Cadets.
Norwich capitalized with a methodical 10-play, 45-yard march.
Beecher connected with Connor McFarland (Manchester, N.H.) for 21 yards to move into WPI territory before finding Tommy McDonagh (Braintree, Mass.) for seven and Dixon for another 15. A holding penalty backed the Cadets away from the goal line, but Zack Zegarra (Ridgewood, N.J.) converted a 31-yard field goal to trim the deficit to 7-3 with 3:16 remaining in the first quarter.
The Cadet defense forced a punt on WPI's ensuing series, allowing Norwich to put together another lengthy scoring possession early in the second.
Beginning at its own 47, Norwich consumed more than five minutes while covering 35 yards. Beecher connected with Dixon twice for gains of 14 and eight yards, while Will Patenaude (Goffstown, N.H.) converted a third-and-one with a 10-yard run to move the Cadets inside the WPI 20.
Zegarra eventually drilled a 35-yard field goal, his second of the afternoon, to bring Norwich within 7-6 with 9:35 remaining before halftime.
The Engineers answered immediately, however.
On the first play of the following possession, Dylan Gallo connected with Dante Atwood for an 85-yard touchdown, restoring WPI's eight-point advantage just 12 seconds after Norwich had pulled within one.
WPI added another touchdown later in the quarter on a five-yard completion from Gallo to Ethan Frisch, then closed the half with Nathan Napier's 42-yard field goal as time expired, sending the Engineers into the break with a 24-6 lead.
Special teams again worked against Norwich early in the third quarter when Kellen Lachapelle returned a punt 56 yards for a touchdown, stretching the WPI advantage to 31-6.
The Engineers followed with another scoring drive, covering 72 yards in eight plays before Gallo found Dylan Dipietro for a 39-yard touchdown to make it 38-6 midway through the third.
Norwich responded with its sharpest offensive possession of the afternoon.
Starting at its own 23, the Cadets moved 77 yards across eight plays. Beecher found Fionn Parker-Cummings (Bangor, Maine) for 15 yards before returning to Parker-Cummings for a 46-yard completion that moved Norwich all the way to the WPI 16.
Facing fourth-and-10 later in the series, Beecher connected with Declan Lay (Brunswick, Maine) for a 16-yard touchdown. Zegarra converted the extra point to complete the drive and pull Norwich within 38-13 with 6:06 remaining in the third.
The Cadet defense followed with a stop, and Norwich found the end zone again early in the fourth.
Beginning at its own 42, Norwich moved 58 yards in eight plays. Patenaude rushed for nine yards before Beecher connected with Jack Berthiaume (Plainville, Mass.) for 11 to move across midfield. A WPI roughing-the-passer penalty extended the drive, and Beecher later scrambled six yards to the Engineers' 17.
After Dixon picked up three yards through the air, Patenaude took the ball on fourth-and-one and broke through for a 14-yard touchdown run, cutting the margin to 38-19 with 10:09 remaining. The ensuing two-point attempt was unsuccessful.
Norwich's defense gave the offense another opportunity almost immediately, stopping WPI on fourth-and-one at the Cadet 45.  Madux McGrath (Amherst, N.H.) dropped Macomber for a one-yard loss to force the turnover on downs with just over eight minutes remaining.
The Cadets could not capitalize, however, and WPI later put together an 82-yard drive that Macomber finished with a seven-yard touchdown run to account for the final margin.
Beecher finished the afternoon 17-of-43 passing for 232 yards, one touchdown, and no interceptions, with Norwich playing turnover-free football offensively.
Dixon remained Beecher's leading target, hauling in nine receptions for 94 yards while also totaling 71 yards on five kickoff returns. Parker-Cummings added three catches for 77 yards, including Norwich's longest offensive play of the afternoon on his 46-yard reception.
McFarland recorded a 21-yard catch, Lay supplied the 16-yard touchdown reception, and Berthiaume added an 11-yard grab.
Patenaude led Norwich on the ground with 41 yards on 12 carries and his fourth-quarter touchdown, while Beecher added 23 rushing yards. The Cadets finished with 296 yards of total offense, including 232 through the air.
Norwich also produced points on all four of its trips into the red zone, finishing with two touchdowns and two field goals, while converting both of its fourth-down opportunities. Zegarra remained perfect on his field-goal attempts, connecting from 31 and 35 yards.
Defensively, Corey Stone (Piscataway, N.J.), Elijah Torres (Bronx, N.Y.), and Daley each finished with six total tackles to lead the Cadets. Torres added a tackle for loss and a pass breakup, while Daley recorded a tackle for loss, a pass breakup, and a quarterback hurry.
McGrath and Tank Jemison (Ardmore, Pa.) each added five tackles, with McGrath recording a tackle for loss and Jemison supplying a quarterback hurry. Gavin Lewis (Groveland, Mass.) finished with three tackles and a team-best two tackles for loss, while John Dixner (Fenton, Mich.) and Harry Ells (Centerville, Mass.) each contributed half a tackle for loss.
Dixon also made an impact on special teams defensively, forcing a fourth-quarter fumble on a WPI punt return, although the Engineers recovered the loose ball.
Caleb Laisch (Alexandria, Va.) handled another sizable workload in the punting game, averaging 44.1 yards across eight punts. He placed three inside the WPI 20, recorded three punts of at least 50 yards, and finished with a long of 58.
WPI finished with 448 yards of total offense, producing 302 through the air and 146 on the ground. The Engineers' biggest advantage came through explosive plays, with touchdowns covering 85 yards through the air, 85 yards on a kickoff return, 56 yards on a punt return, and 39 yards through the air. Norwich, meanwhile, finished with 14 first downs and controlled possession for 28:48.
The Cadets will close their three-game road swing next Saturday, Oct. 10, stepping out of conference play to visit Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, Maine. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
Norwich will then return to Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium for back-to-back NEWMAC contests, beginning with a 2:00 p.m. Homecoming Weekend matchup against Maritime College on Saturday, Oct. 17. The Cadets will follow by welcoming the United States Coast Guard Academy for Parents & Family Weekend in the annual Little Army-Navy Game, with the longtime rivals once again competing for The Mug.
