Football: Patenaude scores three times, Cadets pull away for 28-7 win at Maine Maritime

CASTINE, Maine - The Norwich University football team put together its most complete road performance of the season on Saturday afternoon, combining an explosive passing attack, a punishing second-half ground game, and a disruptive defensive effort to defeat Maine Maritime Academy, 28-7, in non-conference action at Ritchie Field.

The Cadets broke a scoreless deadlock on a 47-yard touchdown connection from Landon Beecher (Holliston, Mass.) to Jahmir Dixon (Philadelphia, Pa.) early in the second quarter before Will Patenaude (Goffstown, N.H.) took over after halftime, rushing for three touchdowns to help Norwich pull away.

Norwich improves to 2-3 overall after accumulating 432 yards of offense, including 283 through the air and 149 on the ground. The Cadets held Maine Maritime to 287 total yards, limited the Mariners to just 73 rushing yards on 30 attempts, and surrendered only one touchdown across the afternoon.

The defense made an immediate impact.

Maine Maritime received the opening kickoff, but its first possession lasted only three plays. On third-and-five from the Mariners' 37, Corey Stone (Piscataway, N.J.) stepped in front of a Harris Stone pass near midfield, giving Norwich possession at the Maine Maritime 49 just 1:27 into the game.

The Cadets nearly cashed in immediately. Beecher connected with Fionn Parker-Cummings (Bangor, Maine) for 11 yards before hitting Dixon for 36 more, moving Norwich all the way to the Mariners' 12.

Patenaude carried twice to reach the seven, and Beecher found Dixon for another three yards, but Maine Maritime broke up a fourth-down pass at the four-yard line to keep the game scoreless.

Norwich continued to control field position throughout the opening quarter, with Caleb Laisch (Alexandria, Va.) pinning the Mariners inside their own 10 before the Cadets mounted another sustained possession late in the period.

Starting from its own 23, Norwich moved methodically across the field behind Iverson Brandon (Bartow, Fla.), Declan Lay (Brunswick, Maine), and Connor McFarland (Manchester, N.H.). Lay converted a third-and-six with a 10-yard catch before McFarland moved the chains again with a seven-yard reception.

One play into the second quarter, Norwich finally broke through.

Beecher took a shot down the middle and found Dixon for 47 yards, with the junior receiver taking the completion into the end zone. Zack Zegarra (Ridgewood, N.J.) converted the extra point to finish the seven-play, 77-yard drive and give the Cadets a 7-0 advantage just nine seconds into the quarter.

The Norwich defense made sure that lead held.

Somto Ndukwe (West Orange, N.J.) delivered a 15-yard sack on Maine Maritime's next possession, and Harry Ells (Centerville, Mass.) later dropped Stone for another seven-yard loss to force a punt deep in Mariner territory.

Norwich had an opportunity to extend the lead late in the half when Beecher found Dixon for a 25-yard completion to the Maine Maritime 19, but Zegarra's 37-yard field-goal attempt went wide.

The Mariners then mounted their best drive of the half, moving to the Norwich 14 in the closing seconds. The Cadet defense prevented Maine Maritime from reaching the end zone, and Iva Hayes (Miami, Fla.) blocked the ensuing field-goal attempt as time expired, sending Norwich into halftime with the 7-0 lead intact.

The Cadets emerged from the break with their most methodical possession of the afternoon.

Starting at their own 12, Norwich put together a 12-play, 88-yard touchdown march that consumed more than seven minutes. Beecher converted a pair of third downs through the air to Dixon, first for five yards and later for 22, before Patenaude moved the chains with a seven-yard rush.

Beecher later found Dixon for 17 yards and Jack Berthiaume (Plainville, Mass.) for 19 more, moving Norwich to the Maine Maritime six.

Patenaude handled the rest, powering across the goal line from six yards out. Zegarra's second extra point extended the lead to 14-0 with 7:46 remaining in the third.

Maine Maritime finally found its breakthrough late in the quarter, covering 92 yards in six plays and scoring on a 36-yard pass from Stone to Ty Regis. The extra point trimmed Norwich's advantage to 14-7 with 1:04 remaining.

Norwich's response was immediate and decisive.

After taking over at its own 31, the Cadets overcame an early holding penalty before Beecher found Dixon for 27 yards to move out toward midfield. On the next snap, Beecher went right back to his leading receiver, connecting for another 42 yards all the way to the Maine Maritime 13.

Patenaude gained five on the ground before bursting through for an eight-yard touchdown, completing a five-play, 69-yard answer and restoring a two-score cushion at 21-7 with 12:55 remaining.

The Mariners threatened to cut into the lead again, advancing from their own 37 to the Norwich four. But the Cadet defense refused to give ground when it mattered most.

Maine Maritime eventually faced fourth-and-goal from the Norwich seven, where Stone scrambled toward the left side but was stopped at the one-yard line, giving the Cadets possession on downs with 8:19 remaining.

Norwich then delivered the afternoon's exclamation point.

Backed against its own goal line, the Cadets began what became a 99-yard touchdown drive. Patenaude helped create breathing room with an eight-yard rush before Brandon moved the chains with an 11-yard gain.

Norwich benefited from another Maine Maritime penalty as the possession moved toward midfield, and Patenaude then found daylight.

The senior broke through the middle and raced 57 yards untouched for his third touchdown of the second half, finishing the seven-play drive and extending the Norwich lead to 28-7 with 4:50 remaining.

The defense closed the afternoon in fitting fashion.

Maine Maritime picked up one first down on its ensuing possession, but Tim Macaione (Gilmanton Iron Works, N.H.) dropped the Mariners for a four-yard loss on third down before following with a five-yard sack on fourth-and-five, returning possession to Norwich with just over two minutes remaining.

Patenaude supplied the centerpiece of Norwich's offensive effort, carrying 20 times for 128 yards and three touchdowns while averaging 6.4 yards per attempt. His 57-yard fourth-quarter touchdown represented the longest rush of the afternoon.

Beecher turned in one of his most efficient performances of the season, completing 18 of 28 passes for 283 yards, one touchdown, and no interceptions. Norwich finished without an offensive turnover while averaging 7.3 yards per play.

Dixon authored a dominant afternoon through the air, hauling in 11 receptions for 228 yards and the 47-yard touchdown. His receiving total accounted for more than 80 percent of Norwich's passing yardage and gave him 228 all-purpose yards.

McFarland added three receptions, while Berthiaume, Parker-Cummings, Lay, and Patenaude each recorded one catch.

Defensively, Stone led Norwich with eight total tackles while adding the first-quarter interception and two pass breakups. Madux McGrath (Amherst, N.H.) followed with seven tackles, a tackle for loss, and a pass breakup.

Ells totaled five tackles, a sack, and 1.5 tackles for loss, while Ndukwe recorded three tackles, a sack, two tackles for loss, and a quarterback hurry. Aidan Hamilton added four tackles and a tackle for loss, while Tim Macaione recorded two tackles, a sack, and two tackles behind the line of scrimmage. Michael Macaione (Gilmanton Iron Works, N.H.) also supplied a sack and quarterback hurry.

As a group, the Cadets finished with four sacks, nine tackles for loss, seven pass breakups, three quarterback hurries, one interception, and one blocked kick. Norwich also limited Maine Maritime to just two conversions on 13 third-down attempts and stopped the Mariners on two of their three fourth-down tries.

Laisch continued to help Norwich control field position, placing three of his four punts inside the Maine Maritime 20-yard line. Zegarra converted all four of his extra-point attempts.

Norwich will now return to Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium for the first time in more than a month, welcoming Maritime College for a 2:00 p.m. NEWMAC matchup on Saturday, Oct. 17, as part of Homecoming Weekend.

The afternoon will also feature several special Homecoming elements, including a halftime ribbon-cutting ceremony recognizing the newly redesigned Sabine Field turf, a performance by the Norwich drill team, and recognition of the Norwich Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2026.

Norwich will remain at home the following weekend, welcoming the United States Coast Guard Academy for Parents & Family Weekend and the annual Little Army-Navy Game, with the longtime rivals once again competing for The Mug.
