NORTHFIELD, Vt. - In a finish befitting one of Vermont's fiercest collegiate rivalries, the Norwich University football team reclaimed the Maple Sap Bucket in dramatic fashion on Saturday afternoon, as Harry Ells (Centerville, Mass.) returned an interception 17 yards for the game-winning touchdown with 37 seconds remaining to lift the Cadets past Vermont State University Castleton, 17-10, on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium.

The victory snapped Castleton's two-game run in the rivalry, returned the Maple Sap Bucket to Northfield for the first time since 2023, and marked Head Coach Bill Russell's first victory over the Spartans in his third season at the helm.  Norwich improves to 1-1 on the campaign while extending its advantage in the all-time series to 11-6.  The matchup marked the 17th meeting between the in-state rivals, whose series dates back to Castleton's inaugural varsity season in 2009.

What began as a controlled first half for Norwich developed into a tense defensive struggle after the break, with Castleton erasing a 10-point deficit and pulling even late in the fourth quarter.  The final minutes then delivered a succession of momentum swings before Ells supplied the decisive play.

"That game was the best that college football, and a rivalry, has to offer," Russell said.  "Both teams showed remarkable resilience and grit.  Our guys found a way to win, and I couldn't be prouder of the mental toughness they showed when it could have slipped away from them.  As usual when it comes to the Sap Bucket game, the atmosphere was spectacular.  It was another great step forward for our program."

Norwich established itself immediately, taking the opening kickoff and methodically working 56 yards across 12 plays while consuming nearly six minutes.

Will Patenaude (Goffstown, N.H.) carried the ball for 10 yards on the opening snap before Landon Beecher (Holliston, Mass.) helped convert a third-and-long with a 25-yard completion to Declan Lay (Brunswick, Maine).  Patenaude later broke free for 14 yards into the Castleton red zone, and after the Spartan defense prevented Norwich from reaching the end zone, Zack Zegarra (Ridgewood, N.J.) drilled a 31-yard field goal and give the Cadets a 3-0 lead with 9:10 remaining in the first.

The Norwich defense quickly established itself as well.

Tank Jemison (Ardmore, Pa.) dropped Castleton quarterback RJ Monger for a five-yard sack on the Spartans' opening possession, helping force a three-and-out.  Castleton managed only 17 rushing yards and no passing yards throughout the opening quarter as Norwich controlled possession for more than 10 minutes.

The Cadets mounted another extended drive beginning late in the first, moving from their own 10 all the way to the Castleton 23.  Beecher connected with Fionn Parker-Cummings (Bangor, Maine) for 17 yards on third-and-11 and later hit Connor McFarland (Manchester, N.H.) and Jahmir Dixon (Philadelphia, Pa.) as Norwich continued to move the chains.

Castleton finally halted the march with an interception early in the second quarter, but the Norwich defense immediately returned the favor.

After the Spartans moved out to their own 25, Iva Hayes (Miami, Fla.) stepped in front of a Monger pass and secured his first interception of the season, giving Norwich possession near midfield with 7:24 remaining in the half.

The Cadets were unable to capitalize on that takeaway, but after the defense quickly forced another Castleton punt, Norwich delivered its lone offensive touchdown of the afternoon.

Starting from its own 31 with 5:09 remaining, Norwich covered 69 yards in six plays.  Patenaude opened the possession with a 10-yard run before one of the afternoon's biggest offensive plays came on a bit of deception.

McFarland took the ball and launched a deep bass to Parker-Cummings, who hauled it in for a 54-yard gain down to the Castleton four-yard line.

Three plays later, Beecher found Dixon for a three-yard touchdown on third-and-goal.  Zegarra's extra point stretched Norwich's advantage to 10-0 with 1:56 remaining before halftime.

Castleton began to gain traction after the break, putting together a 12-play, 56-yard possession to open the third quarter.  Norwich tightened inside its own 10-yard line, however, forcing the Spartans to settle for a 25-yard field goal from Zach Dragon that trimmed the advantage to 10-3.

The Spartans threatened again on their following possession after a 50-yard completion moved them deep into Norwich territory, but the Cadet defense held on fourth-and-11 from the Norwich 35 to end the drive without points.

That resistance became even more important as Castleton mounted its longest possession of the afternoon spanning the end of the third quarter and much of the fourth.

Beginning from its own 17, the Spartans moved 78 yards across 17 plays and reached the Norwich five.  With Castleton threatening to draw within one point, Madux McGrath (Amherst, N.H.) forced James Colzie IV to fumble, and Jack Daley (Weymouth, Mass.) recovered at the Norwich five with 8:10 remaining.

Momentum swung again almost immediately.

Three plays later, Castleton intercepted Norwich at the Cadet 13 and suddenly had another short field.  Norwich pushed the Spartans backward, highlighted by a nine-yard sack from Austin McCormick (North Grafton, Mass.), but Castleton converted on fourth-and-17 when Monger found Brody Tyburski for a 20-yard touchdown.

Dragon converted the extra point, evening the game at 10-10 with 5:14 remaining.  But, the Norwich defense was not finished.

After the Cadets were forced to punt, Castleton took possession at its own 20 with 3:43 to play and worked out toward its own 37.  On third-and-five, Imari Milton (Miramar, Fla.) broke through for a six-yard sack, forcing the ball loose from Monger before recovering the fumble himself at the Spartan 31.

That takeaway handed Norwich an opportunity to reclaim the lead with 1:15 remaining.

The Cadets moved nine yards over four plays but came up one yard shy on fourth down, giving the Castleton possession at its own 22 with 47 seconds left and seemingly one final opportunity to drive for the victory.

It lasted one play.  On first down, Jemison disrupted Monger's pass and Ells secured the deflection at the Castleton 17.  The junior defensive lineman turned immediately toward the end zone and raced untouched across the goal line, sending the Norwich sideline and home crowd into celebration with 37 seconds remaining.

Zegarra followed with the extra point to put the Cadets ahead, 17-10.

Castleton had one final chance and pushed across midfield in the closing seconds, reaching the Norwich 38 after a 27-yard completion.  The Spartans took one final shot toward the end zone, but Elijah Torres (Bronx, N.Y.) broke up the pass to close out the victory and officially return the Maple Sap Bucket to Northfield.

Norwich's defense proved decisive throughout the afternoon, forcing four Spartan turnovers while recording three sacks, eight tackles for loss, five pass breakups, and five quarterback hurries.  Castleton finished with 317 total yards, but Norwich held the Spartans to just 63 rushing yards on 28 attempts and kept them out of the end zone for the game's first 54 minutes.

Torres led the Cadets with a game-high 11 total tackles while adding a half-tackle for loss and the game-ending pass breakup.  Corey Stone (Piscataway, N.J.) and Jemison each finished with six tackles, with Jemison adding a sack and 1.5 tackles for loss.

Milton delivered one of the most complete defensive performances of the afternoon, finishing with four tackles, a sack, 1.5 tackles for loss, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and a quarterback hurry.  Daley added four tackles and recovered the fourth-quarter fumble forced by McGrath.

Ells finished with three tackles, a half-tackle for loss, two quarterback hurries, and the game-winning interception return, while McCormick recorded a nine-yard sack.  Hayes added Norwich's other inception and a pass breakup.

Offensively, Patenaude carried the workload on the ground, finishing with 72 yards on 26 attempts as Norwich accumulated 82 rushing yards.  Beecher completed 11 passes for 113 yards and the touchdown to Dixon, while McFarland's 54-yard completion to Avery represented the longest play of the afternoon for the Cadets.

Lay led Norwich with three receptions for 35 yards, while Dixon hauled in three passes for 25 yards and a touchdown.  Avery's lone catch went for 54 yards, Parker-Cummings added a 17-yard reception, and Tommy McDonagh (Braintree, Mass.) contributed a 15-yard grab.

Zegarra remained perfect in the kicking game, converting the 31-yard opening-quarter field goal and both extra-point attempts.  Caleb Laisch (Alexandria, Va.) also played an important role in the field-position battle, punting four times for 161 yards, including a 58-yarder in the fourth quarter.

Saturday's victory adds another memorable chapter to a rivalry that began in 2009, when Norwich defeated Castleton, 48-27, in the first collegiate football game between Vermont institutions since Norwich and Middlebury last met in 1991.  The Cadets won five consecutive Maple Sap Bucket meetings from 2018 through 2023 before Castleton claimed the trophy in each of the past two seasons.

Norwich will have an open week before taking its first road trip of the season, traveling to Kings Point, N.Y., on Saturday, Sept. 26, for a 12:00 p.m. matchup against the United States Merchant Marine Academy to open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play.

The Cadets will remain on the road for contests at Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Oct. 3 and Maine Maritime Academy on Oct. 10 before returning to Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 17, to welcome SUNY Maritime College for Homecoming Weekend at 2:00 p.m.
