Men's Tennis: Norwich sweeps intrastate rival VTSU Castleton in dominant rebound win

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University men's tennis team returned to action inside Shapiro Fieldhouse on Wednesday afternoon, delivering a dominant performance in a 7-0 non-conference victory over intrastate rival Vermont State University Castleton.

Norwich set the tone immediately in doubles play, sweeping all three flights by comfortable margins to secure the match's opening point.  Jaxson Redmond (Kennebunkport, Maine) and Terrance Bayly-Henshaw (Scottsville, N.Y.) sparked the effort with a 6-2 decision at No. 1 doubles over Tanner Ciufo and Remy Maynard.

At No. 2, Diego Lorente Fuentes (Valencia, Spain) and Reynard Gan (Chandler, Ariz.) followed with a composed 6-3 victory against Charles Watson and Trevor Castino.  The Cadets completed the doubles sweep on the No. 3 court, where Juan Gonzalez Torres (Toa Alta, Puerto Rico) and Stephen Hartigan (Tyngsboro, Mass.) earned a 6-3 win over Tyler Burke and Lukas Bukatovs.

The Cadets carried that momentum seamlessly into singles competition, capturing all six matches to seal the shutout.  Ethan Teluk (Manlius, N.Y.) opened the singles scoring with a decisive 6-1, 6-0 result at No. 6 against Bukatovs.  Bayly-Henshaw then extended Norwich's advantage with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Maynard at No. 2.

Hartigan controlled play at No. 5 singles, earning a 6-0, 6-4 decision against Burke, while Gonzalez Torres outlasted Castino in a competitive battle on the No. 4 court, securing a 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 triumph.  Redmond added another point at the top flight with a strong 6-1, 6-1 win over Ciufo before Lorente Fuentes closed out the sweep in commanding fashion, defeating Watson 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3.

Wednesday's contest also featured three exhibition matches.  Gan and Jack Desjardins (Nashua, N.H.) each recorded 6-0, 6-0 victories in singles play, with Gan topping Addy Boynton and Desjardins defeating Jackson Paquin.  In doubles exhibition action, Pierce Rohm (Queensbury, N.Y.) teamed with Teluk for a 6-2 victory over Boynton and Paquin.

The win marks Norwich's third consecutive victory over the Spartans, following 8-1 and 5-4 triumphs over VTSU Castleton during the 2025 season.
