NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University men's tennis team continued its strong early-season run on Saturday afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader from Lesley University inside Shapiro Fieldhouse. The Cadets opened the day with a 7-0 victory in their Empire 8 Conference opener before following with a 5-2 non-conference win to complete the sweep.
With the pair of victories, Norwich improves to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in Empire 8 play, matching last season's historic start over seven matches. The Cadets also move to 4-0 all-time against the Lynx, outscoring Lesley by a combined 29-3 margin across the four meetings.
Norwich established control early in the conference opener, securing the doubles point behind a trio of decisive performances. The No. 2 pairing of
Diego Lorente Fuentes (Valencia, Spain) and
Reynard Gan (Chandler, Ariz.) set the tone with a 6-0 sweep over Hunter Treanor and Bennett Locke, before
Jaxson Redmond (Kennebunkport, Maine) and
Terrance Bayly-Henshaw (Scottsville, N.Y.) followed with a 6-1 victory against Thomas Nicol and Jeremy Ouellette at the top flight to clinch the point.
Stephen Hartigan (Tyngsboro, Mass.) and
Juan Gonzalez Torres (Toa Alta, Puerto Rico) completed the doubles sweep with another 6-1 result at No. 3 over Vincent Spirito and Reuben Wasserman.
Momentum carried seamlessly into singles play, where Norwich captured all six matches in straight sets to secure the shutout. Lorente Fuentes was first off the court with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 over Treanor, followed closely by
Ethan Teluk (Manlius, N.Y.), who posted a 6-0, 6-2 decision against Spirito at No. 6. Gonzalez Torres added another point with a 6-0, 6-0 performance at No. 5 over Locke, while Hartigan controlled his No. 4 matchup against Wasserman, 6-3, 6-1.
Redmond delivered a composed 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 1 over Nicol, and Bayly-Henshaw capped the sweep with a 6-1, 6-0 result, downing Ouellette at No. 2 to finalize the 7-0 conference triumph.
In the afternoon rematch, Norwich once again built its foundation in doubles play, claiming all three courts to seize the early advantage.
Brandon Adamson (Londonderry, N.H.) and
Aerielle Harris (Las Vegas, Nev.) were first to finish with a 6-2 win at No. 2 over Wasserman and Locke, followed by a 6-0 result from Teluk and
Pierce Rohm (Queensbury, N.Y.) against Treanor and Ouellette at No. 1.
Jack Desjardins (Nashua, N.H.) and
David Littlefield (Goffstown, N.H.) completed the sweep, defeating Nicol and Spirito, 6-4, at No. 3.
The Cadets secured the team victory in singles competition by winning four of six matches. Harris led the charge with a 6-1, 6-0 decision against Spirito at No. 6, while Rohm followed with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Hunter at No. 3. Littlefield added a 6-2, 6-1 triumph, taking down Locke at No. 5, and Adamson delivered a steady 6-1, 6-4 victory against Wasserman at No. 4 to put the match out of reach.
Lesley claimed its two points in tightly contested matches at the top of the lineup, both featuring tiebreakers. Ouellette edged Desjardins in a three-set battle at No. 1, 5-7, 6-0, 0-1 (4-10), while Nicol outlasted Gan at No. 2, 1-6, 6-3, 0-1 (3-10).
