Men's Tennis: Terriers halt Cadets' unbeaten start in regional showdown

WATERVILLE, Maine - The Norwich University men's tennis team saw its undefeated start to the 2026 campaign come to an end on Saturday afternoon, falling 6-1 to Empire 8 divisional foe Thomas College in a non-conference matchup at the Harold Alfond Athletic Center.

Thomas seized early momentum in doubles play, capturing victories on the No. 2 and No. 3 courts to secure the opening team point.  Dominic Clifford and Camden Herrick delivered a 6-1 decision over Diego Lorente Fuentes (Valencia, Spain) and Juan Gonzalez Torres (Toa Alta, Puerto Rico) at No. 2 doubles, while Nick Magiera and Ricky Salazar followed with a 6-3 win against Stephen Hartigan (Tyngsboro, Mass.) and Reynard Gan (Chandler, Ariz.) on the No. 3 court.

Norwich responded with a strong showing in the top doubles flight, as Jaxson Redmond (Kennebunkport, Maine) and Terrance Bayly-Henshaw (Scottsville, N.Y.) earned a 6-4 victory over Thai Nguyen and Casey Duncan to close the doubles portion of the match.

Lorente Fuentes provided the Cadets' lone point in singles competition, opening the second half with a composed 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 triumph over Herrick on the No. 3 court.  Thomas, however, rallied to capture the remaining five singles matches, many of which were tightly contested.

At No. 2 singles, Clifford secured a 6-2, 6-4 win over Bayly-Henshaw, while Juan Gonzalez Torres battled through a three-set duel at No. 4 before falling to Calvin Cutler, 4-6, 6-4, 2-6.  Magiera posted a 6-0, 6-1 decision against Jack Desjardins (Nashua, N.H.) on the No. 6 court, and another closely fought encounter unfolded at No. 5, where Duncan edged Hartigan in a tiebreaker, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).

The final match of the afternoon came at the top singles position, as Redmond and Nguyen engaged in a back-and-forth battle.  Nguyen ultimately prevailed in a match tiebreaker, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 1-0 (10-8), to seal the team victory for the Terriers.
