Men's Tennis: Cadets earn statement non-conference win over cross-divisional foe Houghton

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University men's tennis team continued its strong start to the 2026 campaign on Saturday afternoon, securing a convincing 6-1 victory over cross-divisional foe Houghton University in a non-conference matchup inside Shapiro Fieldhouse.

The Cadets captured the early advantage by claiming two of three doubles matches to earn the first point of the afternoon.  Jaxson Redmond (Kennebunkport, Maine) and Terrance Bayly-Henshaw (Scottsville, N.Y.) led the way at No. 1 doubles, defeating Rune Camps and Eben Schilke, 6-2.  Houghton responded with a tightly contested win at No. 2 doubles, where Jonas Likens and Benjamin Unger edged Juan Gonzalez Torres (Toa Alta, Puerto Rico) and Diego Lorente Fuentes (Valencia, Spain), 6-3.

Norwich secured the doubles point on the No. 3 court, as Stephen Hartigan (Tyngsboro, Mass.) and Reynard Gan (Chandler, Ariz.) earned a 6-2 victory over Caleb Hilsher and James Adenuga.

Momentum carried into singles play, where Norwich claimed five of six matches to seal the team victory.  Redmond battled through a competitive showdown at the top flight, outlasting Camps in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5.  Bayly-Henshaw followed with a composed 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Schilke at No. 2 singles, while Hartigan also needed late resilience at No. 5, closing out Hilsher, 6-1, 7-5.

Jack Desjardins (Nashua, N.H.) delivered another decisive performance at No. 6 singles, defeating Adenuga, 6-0, 6-2, to help push the Cadets closer to the finish line.

Houghton secured its lone point in singles competition, as Likens prevailed in a tightly contested match over Gonzalez Torres, 6-4, 7-6 (10-8).  Lorente Fuentes completed the Norwich victory in dramatic fashion at No. 4 singles, rallying from a first-set deficit to defeat Unger, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

The victory marks the second consecutive season in which Norwich has opened the year with back-to-back wins, improving to 13-1 in competition this season following a 7-0 season-opening sweep over Vermont State University Lyndon earlier in the week.
