NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University men's tennis team opened the 2026 campaign in commanding fashion on Wednesday afternoon, securing its 29th straight victory over Vermont State University Lyndon with a 7-0 non-conference sweep inside Shapiro Fieldhouse.
The Cadets established early control by sweeping all three doubles matches to claim the season's first team point. At No. 1 doubles, the pairing of
Jaxson Redmond (Kennebunkport, Maine) and
Terrance Bayly-Henshaw (Scottsville, N.Y.) rolled past David Gratton and Wesley McIntyre, 6-0.
Juan Gonzalez Torres (Toa Alta, Puerto Rico) and
Diego Lorente Fuentes (Valencia, Spain) followed with a 6-0 decision over Joe Buchanan and Olivia Cordova, while
Stephen Hartigan (Tyngsboro, Mass.) and
Reynard Gan (Chandler, Ariz.) completed the sweep with a 6-0 victory against Parker Pierce and Addie Jensen.
Norwich carried that momentum into singles play, capturing all six matches to complete the shutout. Four contests were decided in straight-set sweeps. Gonzalez Torres posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over Pierce at No. 3 singles, while Lorente Fuentes matched the effort with a 6-0, 6-0 result against Buchanan in the No. 4 spot.
Jack Desjardins (Nashua, N.H.) earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Cordova at No. 6 singles, and Redmond secured another flawless performance with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Gratton on the top court.
Hartigan came close to a perfect outing in his No. 5 singles match, defeating Jensen, 6-1, 6-0. The most competitive matchup of the afternoon came at No. 2 singles, where Bayly-Henshaw went the distance against McIntyre. After splitting the opening two sets, 6-2 and 3-6, Bayly-Henshaw prevailed in a match tiebreaker, 1-0 (10-6), to clinch the 7-0 team victory.
Wednesday's action also featured three exhibition doubles matches. Gan and
Ethan Teluk (Manlius, N.Y.) teamed up for a 6-1 win over Pierce and Buchanan, while
Brandon Adamson (Londonderry, N.H.) and
Pierce Rohm (Queensbury, N.Y.) secured a 6-0 victory against Jensen and Cordova.
David Littlefield (Goffstown, N.H.) and
Noah Hernandez (New Bedford, Mass.) closed the afternoon with a 6-0, 6-1 exhibition doubles triumph over Pierce and Buchanan.
The victory marks Norwich's 29th consecutive win over the Hornets, a streak that dates back to a 9-0 sweep inside Shapiro Fieldhouse on Apr. 16, 2009.
