CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The Norwich rifle team finished third in a competitive three-team match on Saturday as part of the annual Beanpot, posting an aggregate score of 4358 against Akron (4679) and hosting MIT (4419). The Beanpot concluded Sunday
with the University of Rhode Island competing against Coast Guard, which moved to the Cadets, placing fourth out of five competitors.
Norwich totaled 2149 in smallbore and 2209 in air rifle, earning third place overall, while currently sitting fourth in the Mid-Atlantic Rifle Conference (MAC) aggregate standings and third in MAC smallbore following the weekend's competition.
Evan Elders (Spring Hill, Fla.) led the Cadets in smallbore with a team-high 552, finishing 10th overall in the discipline and pacing Norwich's strongest event of the day.
Katie Gillooly (Woodbridge, Va.) topped the Norwich lineup in air rifle with a 561, placing 12th overall in a deep field that included multiple nationally ranked programs.
Two Cadets recorded personal records during the match:
- Makeda Watson (Braintree, Mass.) posted a career-best 539 in smallbore
- Alma Negrete (Fontana, Calif.) set a new PR in air rifle with a 558
Additional key performances included
Sage Kontny (Clancy, Mont.) (531 SB / 546 AR = 1077 aggregate
), Ben Kelley (Niantic, Conn.) (532 SB), and
Aiden Burris (Marrietta, Ga.) (534 SB), as Norwich placed five shooters inside the top 16 of the smallbore standings.
Akron claimed the team title behind the top five individual aggregate finishers, led by Matthew Kimball's match-winning 1179, while MIT finished second in the three-team head-to-head.
Norwich will return to West Point for its next competition, the NCAA qualifiers on Feb. 21.
