HENNIKER, N.H.- The Norwich women's ice hockey team delivered a historic performance Friday night at Lee Clement Arena, tying a program record for goals in a single game with a 14–1 victory over New England College Pilgrims to open the weekend series.
The 14-goal outburst matched program marks previously set on Feb. 4, 2012, and Nov. 11, 2011, and was fueled by a barrage of multi-point performances up and down the lineup.
Anna Lisac (Euclid, Ohio) led the way with four goals and five points, while
Livia Brooks (Walpole, Mass.) recorded a hat trick and three assists, tying the program record for most points in a game.
Lauren Tuzik (Frankfort, Ill.) added a career-best four-point night with two goals and two assists, and
Sophia Nelson (Castle Pines, Colo.) recorded the first multi-goal game of her collegiate career.
Norwich wasted no time setting the tone. Just 54 seconds into the contest,
Madison Anderson (Green Bay, Wis.) kept the puck alive at the left point and found Lisac along the half wall. Lisac skated in uncontested and roofed a backhand over the glove of NEC goaltender Kayden Lallier-Whissel, scoring on the Cadets' second shot of the game and giving Norwich an immediate lead.
The pressure never relented. At the nine-minute mark,
Alex Leslie (Irishtown, N.B.) retrieved the puck in the defensive zone and moved it ahead to Lisac, who touched it to Anderson in stride. Anderson then sprung Brooks on a rush through the neutral zone, and Brooks made a move around a Pilgrim defender before finishing to double the advantage.
Three minutes later, Norwich struck again. Anderson forced a turnover in the offensive zone, and Brooks converted on a wrap-around to make it 3–0. The Cadets weren't done in the opening frame. With four minutes remaining, Anderson won a faceoff cleanly back to Brooks, who sent a cross-ice feed to a pinching Tuzik at the far post. Tuzik tapped it home to push the lead to four.
New England College briefly answered late in the period, as Meadow Gilchrist scored off the rush with two minutes left, but Norwich still carried a commanding 4–1 lead into the first intermission.
The Cadets turned the game into a rout in the second period, pouring in four more goals. Lisac struck twice in the frame, including a power-play tally that completed her hat trick before the midway point of the game. Nelson and Anderson added the other two goals in the period, as Norwich continued to dominate possession and tempo.
The offense in the middle frame was complemented by contributions from the blue line, with
Jordan Brady (Green Bay, Wis.),
Ellin Rees (Cardiff, Wales, U.K.), Leslie, and
Maggie Hunter (Royal Oak, Mich.) all recording assists as the Cadets stretched the lead to 8–1 after forty minutes.
Norwich saved its biggest push for the third period, erupting for six goals to close out the historic night. Lisac netted her fourth goal of the contest, Brooks completed her hat trick, and Nelson added her second of the game. Tuzik found the back of the net for the second time, while
Olivia Boyer (Saint Paul, Minn.) and
Libby Lane (Northville, Mich.) also joined the scoring parade.
By the final horn, Norwich had contributions from every corner of the lineup, showcasing its depth, pace, and relentless forecheck throughout all three periods. Anderson finished the night with four assists and five points, joining Lisac and Brooks atop the scoresheet in a performance that will be remembered in program history.
"It was nice to have the entire lineup play consistent minutes today," said Head Coach
Justin Simpson. "We got contributions from each line and D pair. While we produced at a high level offensively tonight, I think we let up defensively at times, especially in the third period. This is our first stay-over trip of the season. I am glad the team can enjoy the win and team bonding at the hotel and on the road. We will be ready for tomorrow's game."
The Cadets will look to build on the historic effort when they close out the weekend series against New England College on Saturday, Jan. 31, with puck drop scheduled for 3 p.m. at Lee Clement Arena.
