NORTHFIELD, Vt.- The Norwich Women's Soccer team returned to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play Saturday night when they hosted Saint Joseph's College of Maine during Homecoming Weekend and emerged with a shutout victory.
From the start, the Cadets held a decided territorial edge. On their second corner kick opportunity of the night in the 20
th minute,
Lily Briggs (Fair Haven, Vt.) sent the ball directly inside the left post for an olimpico to put Norwich ahead.
The Monks attempted to counter, but
Abby Kirrane (Lunenburg, Mass.), along with the rest of the Norwich back line, kept them off the scoresheet, sending the game to halftime with the Cadets holding a one-goal lead and a 9-2 shot advantage.
Five minutes into the second half, Norwich extended their lead. A throw-in came to
Kat Probst (Gouverneur, N.Y.), drawing a double team. After the ball was swiped away, it came to
Colby Magoon (Loudon, N.H.), who sent it to the top right corner with her right foot from 13 yards out, making it a two-goal game.
The Cadets continued to push the attack as the half wore on, with Probst coming close on several occasions. In the final five minutes, Probst drove towards the goal and lost control before Briggs cleaned up the loose change, scoring her second of the contest, clinching the win, and Kirrane's first clean sheet.
Norwich will round out their brief homestand on Wednesday evening, Sept. 24, when Lasell comes to the hill for a 5 p.m. kickoff.
