NORTHFIELD, Vt.- The Norwich Women's Soccer team rounded out its brief homestand on Wednesday afternoon by hosting Lasell in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play, where the Lasers prevailed.
After most of the first half was a defensive chess match, with limited offense, the Lasers broke through just before the half. In the 42
nd minute, Lasell was awarded a penalty kick where Brianna Marero converted with a right-footed boot inside the right post to give the Lasers the lead at the half.
The Cadets came out of the half with their first sustained offensive flurry, with
Kat Probst (Gouverneur, N.Y.) and
Bella Roy (Weare, N.H.) generating chances that were turned away. However, Lasell extended their lead in the 64
th minute with Camdyn Lamarre finding the top right corner.
After a
Jasmine Hackman (Clear Brook, Va.) opportunity was turned aside by Laser goalkeeper Elizabeth Da Silva, the Lasers had the Cadets on their heels, but
Abby Kirrane (Lunenburg, Mass.) and the rest of the Norwich back end held firm.
In the 78
th minute, the Cadets shrank the deficit. A corner was awarded, taken by
Heidi Smith (Sammamish, Wash.). Smith's service from the left corner flag found the flying head of Probst at the right post to close the Lasell lead to one. The Lasers kept Norwich at bay to preserve the one-goal victory.
The Cadets will continue GNAC play when they visit Simmons University on Sept. 27 with a 1 p.m. kickoff.
