Men's Soccer: Cadets Fall in Heartbreaker to Blue Jays

NORTHFIELD, Vt.- The Norwich Men's Soccer field returned to their home turf of Sabine Field Friday night to resume Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play against the reigning conference champion University of Saint Joseph (USJ) during the festivities of Homecoming Weekend.

The first half was a fast-paced, crisply played period of two teams looking to assert themselves atop the GNAC table. Blue Jays striker Emmanuel Ofori had several through balls that were smothered by first-year goalkeeper Tyler Ziminski (Huntington, N.Y.) while making his maroon and gold debut between the pipes.

The Cadets' first chance came in the 21st minute with Christian Grubic (Montvale, N.J.) attempting a bicycle kick fresh off the bench, but it was stopped by USJ netminder Will Slayton. Norwich pushed the play in the late stages of the half, with Grubic and Oleksandr Kharchuk (Ukraine) having chances off consecutive corners that were turned aside.
Out of the halftime break, Ofori challenged Ziminski with two shots on target. Ziminski made the saves when called upon, leading the Cadets to seize the momentum. Diego Fuentes (Valencia, Spain) had two chances that Slayton denied before a flurry of offense.

Off a free kick following a yellow card to USJ, Alessandro D'Arena (Berlin, Conn.) sent the ball into the attacking end. Eventually, the ball came to Kharchuk, whose original shot was stopped. Sharmarke Hassan (Burlington, Vt.) collected the rebound, which was denied before Slayton made a third stop on Cameron Albrecht (Albuquerque, N.M.) to end the threat.

After the Cadets held the edge in play for the majority of the second half, the Blue Jays broke the scoreless tie in the 89th minute. Nate Gabriel collected a turnover in USJ's attacking midfield and sent the ball to the top left corner to give the Blue Jays the lead. Norwich had a chance to answer with a corner in the final minute but were turned away.

The Cadets will now head back on the road when they take the trip down Interstate 89 to visit Colby-Sawyer on Sept. 23 at 4 p.m.
