Men's Soccer: Perkins Sinks 85th Minute Equalizer as Cadets Draw with Kangaroos

CANTON, N.Y.- The Norwich Men's Soccer team continued their brief early-season road swing when they stopped at SUNY Canton on Tuesday afternoon to hold their first-ever meeting with the Kangaroos.

Off the opening kickoff, the Cadets dominated territorially, rattling off two shots on target in the first six minutes. On their first chance to counter, in the eighth minute, Canton's Chris Escobar sent a ball to the bottom left corner out of the reach of Kirk Rodgers (Lebanon, Ohio) to put the Kangaroos ahead.

After the goal, Norwich continued to press the offense, including several chances for Diego Fuentes (Valencia, Spain), who were all shut down by Kangaroo keeper Joey Raap. Before the half, Raap made one more stop on Max Lahoud (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) to send Canton into the break holding the 1-0 lead with Raap making seven saves in the opening half.

The two sides traded opportunities early in the second half, including Raap and Rodgers making saves to keep it a one-goal lead. Late in the contest, Norwich finally broke through. Minutes after the Cadets cleared their defending third after a corner, they were granted a throw-in. After Lahoud received the throw-in from Miles Bergeson (Charlotte, Vt.), he sent a long pass to Shea Perkins (Carl Junction, Mo.). Raap came out to defend the pass, but Perkins won the ball and moved around Raap and put the ball in the yawning cage in the 85th minute to even the score, where the result held.

The Cadets will return to Sabine Field for Homecoming Weekend to host defending Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Champion University of Saint Joseph on Friday night, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m.
