Men's Tennis: Cadets sweep VTSU Johnson for second time this season, strengthen hopes for Empire 8 Tournament berth

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University men's tennis team continued its torrid start to the 2025 campaign, rolling to a dominant 9-0 sweep over Vermont State University Johnson in conference action on Wednesday afternoon inside Shapiro Fieldhouse.

The win marks Norwich's second 9-0 victory over the Badgers this season, and its first conference triumph against VTSU Johnson, improving the Cadets to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in league play.  It also extends one of the best starts to a season in program history.

The Cadets wasted no time seizing control, jumping out to a 3-0 lead after a clean sweep in doubles action.  The No. 2 pairing of Jaxson Redmond (Kennebunkport, Maine) and Gabe Wettig (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) got the ball rolling with an 8-2 win over David Heath and Mohammed Semega.  The No. 3 duo of Thomas Riddick (Clayton, N.C.) and Stephen Hartigan (Tyngsboro, Mass.) followed suit with a swift 8-1 decision over Caitlyn Morey and Charlie Guyette, before the top tandem of Keagan Bakke (Gun Barrel City, Texas) and Terrance Bayly-Henshaw (Scottsville, N.Y.) closed out doubles with an 8-3 victory over Adiance Cheromiah and Jack Senecal.

Norwich carried its momentum into singles, where the Cadets rattled off six straight wins in clinical fashion.  Bakke opened singles with a flawless 6-0, 6-0 win over Cheromiah at the No. 1 spot.  Redmond and Riddick mirrored the feat at No. 3 and No. 5 singles, respectively, each dropping just one game between them.  Bayly-Henshaw added a steady 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles, while Wettig picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4.  Hartigan closed out the match with a strong 6-0, 6-1 showing at No. 6.

The win bolsters Norwich's positioning within the North Atlantic Conference/Empire 8's East Division standings, ahead of next week's Empire 8 Tournament.  The Cadets are currently battling SUNY Delhi and Vermont State University Lyndon for one of the final two berths among the East Division's teams, while Thomas College has clinched a spot in the Empire 8 Tournament.
