Men's Tennis: Cadets edged by Anchormen in non-conference Senior Day showdown

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University men's tennis team battled Rhode Island College down to the wire on Thursday afternoon, ultimately falling just short in a tightly-contested 5-4 non-conference decision inside Shapiro Fieldhouse.

The match served as a special occasion for the Cadets, as the program honored lone senior Keagan Bakke (Gun Barrel City, Texas) prior to the start of play in a heartfelt Senior Day ceremony recognizing his impact and leadership throughout his Norwich career.  Additionally, Lieutenant General John J. Broadmeadow, USMC (Retired) and 25th President of Norwich University, delivered the ceremonial coin toss at all three doubles courts to help kick off the day's competition.

Norwich surged out of the gate with two key victories in doubles to take an early 2-1 lead.  The No. 2 pairing of Jaxson Redmond (Kennebunkport, Maine) and Gabe Wettig (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) dominated their match-up, claiming an 8-2 victory Ricky Dagostino and Hajji Glover.  At No. 3 doubles, Thomas Riddick (Clayton, N.C.) and Stephen Hartigan (Tyngsboro, Mass.) followed with a clutch 8-6 win against Zach Siemmao and Elijah Gouin.

In a thrilling No. 1 doubles battle, the Cadets nearly completed a sweep, but Bakke and Terrance Bayly-Henshaw (Scottsville, N.Y.) were edged in a narrow 8-7 (7-5) tiebreaker by Travis Chartier and Andrew Fanning.

The singles portion of the match featured back-and-forth momentum swings, with both sides fighting for every point.  Redmond continued his dominant season with a commanding 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles over James McShane.  Bayly-Henshaw also delivered a strong showing at No. 2 singles, dispatching Gouin in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.

Despite the Cadets' grit, the Anchormen were able to rally in the remaining flights.  Chartier overcame a slow start to defeat Bakke at No. 1 singles, 3-6, 6-0, 6-1, while Wettig fell in a hard-fought three-setter at No. 4, 6-3, 5-7, 0-6.  In another marathon contest, Hartigan pushed Kyle O'Connor to a third-set tiebreaker at No. 6 before narrowly falling, 6-4, 2-6, 6-7 (3-7).

The setback drops Norwich to 7-3 on the season, as the Cadets continue to enjoy one of their most successful campaigns in program history.
