Men's Tennis: Norwich's conference win streak snapped by Thomas in NAC battle

AUGUSTA, Maine - The Norwich University men's tennis team battled through a hard-fought match on the road Saturday afternoon but came up short in a 6-3 setback to Thomas College at the A-COPI Tennis and Sports Center.

The loss marks Norwich's first conference defeat of the season and their second loss overall, both coming at the hands of the Terriers.  The match-up served as a rematch of the earlier non-conference contest between the two programs in March, when Thomas narrowly edged out the Cadets, 5-4, in Shapiro Fieldhouse.

Norwich opened the day with a tightly contested doubles slate.  The Cadets claimed a win at No. 1 doubles, where the duo of Terrance Bayly-Henshaw (Scottsville, N.Y.) and Jaxson Redmond (Kennebunkport, Maine) earned an 8-6 victory to give the Cadets early momentum.  Thomas responded with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to take a 2-1 advantage into singles play.

In singles, the Cadets fought to the finish across the board.  Keagan Bakke (Gun Barrel City, Texas) outlasted his opponent in a dramatic top-flight battle, taking a 7-5, 7-6 win that included a marathon 12-10 tiebreaker.  Bayly-Henshaw bounced back from a first-set tiebreak loss to claim a gritty 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 triumph at No. 2 singles, securing Norwich's final point of the day.  Despite strong efforts throughout the lineup, the Terriers took the remaining four singles matches to lock in the team win.

The Cadets drop to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in NAC play in their debut season as associate members of the North Atlantic Conference and affiliate members of the Empire 8.

Norwich will return to action with a busy week ahead, first hosting intrastate rival Vermont State University Johnson on Wednesday, Apr. 16, at 3:00 p.m. in Shapiro Fieldhouse.  The Cadets will then welcome non-conference opponent Rhode Island College on Thursday, Apr. 17, at 2:30 p.m., before hitting the road again for a NAC matchup at Vermont State University Lyndon on Saturday, Apr. 19, at 1:00 p.m.
