PLYMOUTH, N.H. - The Norwich University men's lacrosse team suffered a 13-1 setback at Plymouth State University on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference bout at Panther Field.
Drew Fleury (Nashua, N.H.) was the lone Cadet to tally a point, ripping in a fourth-quarter goal to go with a ground ball and a caused turnover against the reigning Little East Conference champions.
The Norwich defense was staunch, limiting the Panthers to just three goals in the opening 15 minutes, but Plymouth State's defense was likewise steadfast. The Panthers amassed a 6-0 lead by halftime, eventually growing to 10-0 at the end of the third frame.
Plymouth State quickly added two more goals to open the fourth stanza, before Fleury drilled in Norwich's first score nearly four minutes into the frame to put the Cadets on the board. The Panther defense continued to remain strong as the offense supplied an insurance goal to close the 13-1 victory.
The Cadets finished with 20 successful clears, converting on a perfect 11-11 mark during the final 30 minutes of action.
David Myers (Hainesport, N.J.),
Liam O'Neill (Hingham, Mass.), and
Robert Carr (Amsterdam, N.Y.) helped anchor the defense, pacing the team in caused turnovers with two apiece.Â
Gavin Youngclaus (Middleboro, Mass.) rounded up a team-best three ground balls.
Thomas Hopkins (Chelmsford, Mass.) and
Mason Dils (Watervliet, N.Y.) split time between the pipes, as Hopkins logged six saves while Dils turned away five attempts.
Aiden Renner led the Panthers offensively on four goals with two ground balls and three face-off victories.
The Cadets will return home to Sabine Field to close spring break, hosting Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Saturday, Mar. 8, at 12:00 p.m. Norwich will then host Vermont State University Castleton on Wednesday, Mar. 12, for the annual Connor Roberts Memorial Game.
