Men's Lacrosse: Late Cadet charge halted in spring break loss to Buccaneers

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Time ran short on a late rally for the Norwich University men's lacrosse team, as the Cadets took a 13-9 loss to visiting Massachusetts Maritime Academy in a non-conference battle on Sabine Field on Saturday afternoon.

Seven different Cadets struck the back of the net, spearheaded by a hat trick from Christian Rainis (Wynantskill, N.Y.), who also handed out an assist for four points.  Drew Fleury (Nashua, N.H.), David Gosselin (South Burlington, Vt.), James Raymond (Tracy's Landing, Md.), Chris Smith (Dawsonville, Ga.), Nicholas Wolfgang (New Port Richey, Fla.), and Jake Marcotte (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) supplied goals, with Fleury also tallying two assists, five ground balls, and two caused turnovers.

The Buccaneers ripped in the game's first score just over two minutes in, which Fleury quickly equalized to put Norwich on the board.  The opening half saw Massachusetts Maritime capture early momentum, amassing a 4-1 lead minutes into the second frame, before Rainis and Raymond struck in a four-minute sequence to whittle the advantage down to one.

A tally by the Buccaneers in the waning seconds of the second quarter provided the visitors an offensive swell, with Massachusetts Maritime outscoring the Cadets, 8-2, in a stretch that spanned into the final minutes of the fourth quarter.

Norwich seized life after the Buccaneers claimed a 13-5 edge, rattling off four-straight goals within a five-minute span to begin mounting a comeback, but time ultimately expired on the Cadets' hopes for victory.

The Cadets proved successful on 14 clears, while securing 37 ground balls.  The defense generated 13 caused turnovers, as Clayton Cisar (Aberdeen, Md.) anchored the effort with three.

Mason Dils (Watervliet, N.Y.) saw a complete 60 minutes of action in the crease, turning away 16 shots in his third start of the season.

Norwich remains home next week for another non-conference bout, hosting intrastate rival Vermont State University Castleton for the annual Connor Roberts Memorial Game on Wednesday, Mar. 12, at 7:00 p.m.  Established in 2015, the game is hosted in memory of Connor Roberts, a Norwich lacrosse player who passed away from a sudden heart attack after his sophomore year.  Norwich and Castleton have jointly hosted the Memorial Game, as his brother Ben played lacrosse and hockey with the Spartans.  Last season saw the Cadets claim a 17-8 victory at VTSU Castleton, marking Norwich's eighth-straight win over the Spartans.
