WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass.- In their return to the north from the Sunshine State, the Norwich Baseball team fell in extra innings to Williams Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.
The Cadets jumped ahead early, scratching across runs in each of the first three innings. With two outs in the opening frame, back-to-back singles by
Brock Carpenter (East Berlin, Pa.) and
John O'Connor (Southington, Conn.) put runners on first and second for
Ryan Miller (Westhampton, N.Y.) who drove in Carpenter with a third straight single. In the second,
Jack Medhurst (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) drew a leadoff walk and worked his way to third with two stolen bases before coming home on a two-out RBI single to left field by
Dillan Garza (San Antonio, Texas).
Carpenter led off the third with a single to left, forcing an Ephs pitching change. An O'Connor single and a fielder's choice for Miller loaded the bases for
Michael Sabasteanski (Ashburn, Va.) who ate a hit-by-pitch to plate Carpenter.
On the mound, Miller kept the Williams bats at bay through four innings of work, allowing two runs and three hits before exiting with a one-run lead. He was relieved by
Jordan Talbot (Belchertown, Mass.) who only permitted three hits in his first four innings of work.
With the Cadets holding a one-run lead in the top of the ninth, they added two runs to widen the gap. Garza and
Geffen Franus (Leesburg, Va.) started it off with back-to-back free passes, with Garza coming home on an error after a pitching change. Franus crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by
Kevin Ohlsen (Shirley, N.Y.) in the following at bat. In the bottom of the ninth, the Ephs tied the game on a two-out three-run home run before Williams walked it off with a bases-loaded infield single in the tenth.
Two Norwich batters recorded multi-hit games with O'Connor going two for two, and Carpenter going two for four with two runs scored. The Cadets will open Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play next weekend, starting with a single nine-inning contest against Johnson & Wales on March 22 at 1 PM in Providence before taking on Lasell in a twin bill on March 23 in Newton, also at 1 PM.
