Men's Basketball: 12 Cadets score, Norwich delivers dominant performance in rout of Wildcats

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University men's basketball team put on an offensive clinic in Andrews Gymnasium this afternoon, dismantling JWU (Providence), 95-44, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) clash on Saturday.

Three Cadets tallied double-digits, spearheaded by a 20-point and 14-rebound double-double by Owen Liss (West Suffield, Conn.), alongside five helpers.  Jalen Olivero (Holyoke, Mass.) also handed out five assists, racking up 15 points, while Kohlby Murray (Fair Haven, Vt.) provided 10 points in the win.

Norwich came out firing on all cylinders, cruising to an early 7-0 lead off Murray and Olivero baskets while keeping the Wildcats scoreless for nearly three minutes.  While JWU remained close on a three-pointer to trim the lead to four, the Cadet offense erupted, rattling off 21-straight points over the ensuing 10 minutes to build an insurmountable 25-point advantage.

A small rally by the Wildcats to bring Norwich's edge to 19 brought some danger, but the Cadets rallied, turning a late 36-16 lead into a 34-point advantage at the halftime behind 14-straight points, capped off by an old-fashioned three-point play from Olivero before the break.

Norwich prevented the Wildcats from trimming the lead to below 30 points, as the second half featured a slew of showstopping moments, including back-to-back dunks by Riley Severy (Barre, Vt.) and Sharif Sharif (Burlington, Vt.) that sent Andrews Gymnasium into a frenzy.

Subsequent baskets by JWU provided some life, but a clutch three-pointer by Murray kept the Cadet offense thriving en route to a minute-and-a-half-long stalemate between the two squads.  Daniel Bogre (Colchester, Vt.) broke the deadlock with a long-range shot, as Norwich's bench supplied critical minutes and catapulted the Cadets to a 50-point advantage, courtesy of a Jason Douglas (Montclair, N.J.) freebie.

The Cadet offense was virtually unstoppable, maintaining a 53.6% shooting clip for the night, tied for the second-best performance of the season.  Norwich eclipsed the 90-point plateau for the third time during the 2024-25 campaign, all the while the defense was equally as impressive, setting a season-best in opponent field goal percentage defense after holding the Wildcats to just 31.6% from the floor.

Norwich maintained advantages in several categories, including points in the paint (54-16), points off turnovers (24-6), second-chance points (17-2), bench points (39-14), and fast break points (21-7).  The Cadets enjoyed a seismic margin on the glass, hauling down 49 rebounds while holding the Wildcats to just 25 caroms.

Josh Zangerle was the lone Wildcat in double-digits, tallying 11 points.

The Cadets will now look ahead to a rematch of their season-opener, hosting conference foe New England College on Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 5:00 p.m. within Andrews Gymnasium.  Norwich previously traveled to take on the Pilgrims in a non-conference clash on Nov. 8, 2024, defeating NEC, 71-63, to open the 2024-25 campaign.
