NORTHFIELD, Vt. - History was made within the friendly confines of Andrews Gymnasium tonight, as longtime Norwich University men's basketball head coach
Paul Booth secured his 400th-career victory and the Cadets grounded New England College, 94-67, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tilt on Wednesday evening.
Four Cadets tallied double-digits, spearheaded by a pair of 22-point performances from
Kohlby Murray (Fair Haven, Vt.) and
Jalen Olivero (Holyoke, Mass.), while
Owen Liss (West Suffield, Conn.) added 20 points as the trio combined for a 24-36 shooting clip from the floor.Â
Charles Nogard (Arlington, Mass.) rounded out the double-digit scorers, supplying 10 to go with five steals.
Olivero opened up the scoring off Nogard's first steal and the Cadets never looked back, building a 9-0 lead that ballooned to a double-digit lead just five minutes into the frame on a Murray triple. The Pilgrims had no answers, as Norwich built an insurmountable 25-4 advantage that grew to as large as 33 on a handful of occasions, including in the waning seconds on a Liss layup that gave Norwich a 54-21 lead at the break.
New England College had more success in the second half, but Norwich never wavered, taking two game-high leads of 35 points on baskets from Murray and Liss. The Pilgrims whittled the Cadet edge down to 21, but Norwich prevented the visitors from surging any further.
Clutch baskets down the stretch turned a 22-point Norwich lead into a 94-64 advantage on a
Niklas Nordberg (Fairfield, Pa.) trey on a 12-2 spurt, as the Cadets held on for the dominant 27-point victory.
Norwich maintained leads in several categories, including points in the paint (34-22), fast break points (12-4), second-chance points (21-17), points off turnovers (13-7), and bench points (20-18).
The Cadet offense was electrifying, connecting on a 55.4% clip on field goals and a blistering 13-29 mark from beyond the arc. Norwich was also nearly perfect from the foul line, finishing 9-10 on the night.
The win marks the 400th-career victory for Head Coach
Paul Booth, whose historic coaching career spans four seasons (1988-1992) and 51 wins at Thomas College and 32 seasons (1993-present) and 349 wins at Norwich University. He becomes the 33rd active NCAA Div. III men's basketball coach to cross the 400-career win plateau. In 2007-08, he became the all-time winningest coach in Norwich basketball history, passing
Ed Hockenbury's previous mark of 182 wins.
The Cadets will now look ahead to Saturday, Feb. 15, when a rematch of last season's GNAC Quarterfinals awaits Norwich at Lasell University. Tipoff against the Lasers is set for 3:00 p.m. Norwich then travels to Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Tuesday, Feb. 18, before returning home to host Senior Day against Mitchell College on Saturday, Feb. 22.
