Women's Ice Hockey: Blue Line Drives Cadets to Shutout Win Over Huskies

NORTHFIELD, Vt.- The Norwich Women's Ice Hockey team took the ice for the second time in three days Friday evening when they continued Little East Conference (LEC) competition against Southern Maine (USM), where they shut out the Huskies on the back of offense from the blue line.

The Cadets put USM netminder Maggie Jones to the test early, throwing pucks and bodies toward the crease to create traffic. After Payton Sutherland (Brighton, Colo.) turned aside Husky opportunities, Norwich broke through eight and a half minutes in.

Breanna Ricker (Laconia, N.H.) applied forecheck pressure, preventing a Southern Maine breakout. Olivia Boyer (Saint Paul, Minn.) tapped it along to Livia Brooks (Walpole, Mass.), who circled the zone before passing the puck to Jordan Brady (Green Bay, Wis.) at the right point. Brady made a move to the middle and sent a wrist shot through traffic to give Norwich the lead. The Cadets kept the USM power play at bay and took the one-goal lead into the break.

Norwich kept up the offensive pressure in the second period and added to their lead four and a half minutes in. Alex Leslie (Irishtown, N.B.) intercepted a Huskies clearing attempt in the neutral zone, just in front of the home bench. Leslie skated to the right faceoff dot before roofing a wrist shot over Jones's glove to extend the advantage.

After an unsuccessful Cadet power play, Brady found the back of the net again. After a Brooks net drive was defended, Boyer sent the puck to the right point for Brady, who sent a one-timer through traffic made by Ricker to make it a three-goal game just past the halfway point of the middle frame, where the score stood after forty minutes with Norwich holding a 32-6 shot advantage.

The Cadets continued to push the offense into the third period, eventually making it a four-goal game. Dani Ammons (Centennial, Colo.) poked the puck away from a USM attacker, which Brooks picked up, rushed in, and wristed by Jones for her third point of the night. At the third-period buzzer, a net-mouth scramble off shots by Leslie and Penny Saich (Norwell, Mass.) came to Natalie Heutmaker (Eagan, Minn.), who jammed it home for her first collegiate goal as time expired.

Along with Brooks posting three points, Brady and Leslie helped drive the offense with two points each from the back end, with Boyer also notching two helpers, while Sutherland earned her first clean sheet of the season.

"We played a strong game again today," Head Coach Justin Simpson said. "It was nice to generate as much offense as we did and to capitalize on our chances. We made it difficult for USM and their goalie by putting a lot of pressure on their net. We have another big LEC game before a little break for Thanksgiving."

The Cadets will hit the road for their third game in four days, traveling to UMass Boston before Thanksgiving break. Puck drop is set for 3:00 p.m.
