WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass.- The Norwich Women's Ice Hockey team opened a stretch of three games in four days Wednesday night when they travelled to Williams for a non-conference contest, where the Ephs took the victory in extra time.
The Cadets dominated the opening period, continuously peppering Williams' goaltender and reigning New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Goalie of the Week Erin Pye with pucks. An early power play gave Norwich more momentum, despite coming up empty, as they continued to throw shots and traffic towards the net. Still, Pye stood tall, stopping all 22 Cadet shots in the period, while
Madison Brunet (Timmins, Ont.) faced zero in her end by first intermission.
Out of the break, the Ephs flipped the script and started getting shots on Brunet. Minutes after an unsuccessful man advantage for Williams, Norwich broke through. As they broke out of the defensive zone,
Maggie Hunter (Royal Oak, Mich.) found
Natalie Heutmaker (Eagan, Minn.) to start the rush through the neutral zone. Heutmaker drove the net and eventually found
Olivia Boyer (Saint Paul, Minn.) open in front for the goal, with Heutmaker earning her first collegiate point.
The tally gave Norwich life as they continued to pepper Pye, but the game remained a one-goal contest. Late in the period, the Ephs went to another power play where Annie Gallagher fired a shot through traffic to tie the game eleven and a half minutes into the middle period. The Cadet pressure continued, but the game remained tied after forty minutes.
Pye and Brunet continued to trade save early in the third, including several for Brunet on a successful penalty kill. Norwich continued to hold the upper hand as the period wore on, but it remained a tied contest at the end of regulation with an Ephs power play carrying over into overtime. Forty seconds into extra time, Gallagher buried her second of the game to win the game for Williams, with Pye finishing with 44 saves.
"We played a really, really, solid game." Head Coach
Justin Simpson said. "Erin Pye is one of the top goalies in the country, and she played incredibly well tonight. We had a 1-0 lead at even strength. We have two incredibly huge LEC matchups this weekend before heading into Thanksgiving break."
Norwich kicks off the Little East Conference (LEC) weekend on Friday afternoon, Nov. 21, when it hosts Southern Maine at 4:00 p.m.
