Men's Soccer: Cadets Strike Twice in the Last Ten Minutes to Surge by Elms on Senior Day

NORTHFIELD, Vt.- The Norwich Men's Soccer team rounded out Parents and Family Weekend with a 3-1 victory over Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe Elms Saturday night on Senior Day, with two goals in the final ten minutes.

After an extended feeling-out process, the Cadets broke the ice in the 20th minute. After a deep throw-in got deflected away, Jack Hunt (Gilbert, Ariz.) sent a ball from the left side of the field into the box. The ball deflected off a Blazer defender to the head of Gabriel Cantarero (Annapolis, Md.), who found the top right corner to put Norwich ahead.

After the goal, Elms controlled the territorial play and found the equalizer in the 29th minute. A takeaway in the midfield by Dru Fairthorne sprung GNAC leading scorer Jacobo Molina Ferrer on a break, which he buried into the top right corner. After the tying goal, Kirk Rodgers (Lebanon, Ohio) came on in relief of Tyler Ziminski (Huntington, N.Y.) between the pipes. Both sides had chances late in the half, but the score remained knotted at one.

Early in the second half, Rodgers and Elms keeper Jack Bousquet continued to trade saves. In the 81st minute, the Cadets drew a foul in the box and were awarded a penalty kick, which Diego Fuentes (Valencia, Spain) converted by sending a ball inside the left post.

Norwich preserved their lead by keeping the ball in their attacking third, and sealed the deal in the 89th minute. Dillon Hamrell (Williston, Vt.) forced a turnover in the attacking end and took the ball to the end line on the left side of the net before sending the ball across to Christian Grubic (Montvale, N.J.) with a yawning cage to put the Cadets up two in the final minute.

Before the game, the three members of the 2025-26 graduating class in Rodgers, Oleksandr Kharchuk (Ukraine), and Loagen McMahon (Clarksville, Md.), were honored.

The Cadets' brief homestand continues next week when they welcome longtime rival Saint Joseph's College of Maine to Northfield on Oct. 11 at 1:00 p.m.
