NORTHFIELD, Vt.- The Norwich Men's Soccer team continued their season-long three-game homestand Saturday afternoon when they hosted Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) rival Saint Joseph's College of Maine (SJC), where they took their fourth straight win over the Monks.
After SJC keeper Logan Davis made an early stop on
Oleksandr Kharchuk (Ukraine), the Monks held the edge in territorial play. After a stop by
Kirk Rodgers (Lebanon, Ohio) and several shot attempts blocked by the Norwich defenders, the Cadets worked the ball to their offensive third and were awarded a corner.
Diego Fuentes (Valencia, Spain) sent the ball from the left flag to the right post, where
Christian Grubic (Montvale, N.J.) was waiting and converted on a header in the 21
st minute for the game's lone marker.
Norwich's back line continued to hold firm, as the Monks pressed but struggled to put any shots on target to end the first half. The story continued into the second half, including a potential equalizer being waved off due to a foul. Rodgers made another stop down the stretch to preserve his fourth clean sheet of the season, and Norwich's fourth straight shutout of SJC.
The Cadets will close out their three-game homestand with a midweek clash with Rivier at 4:00 p.m. on Oct. 15.
