NEW LONDON, Conn.- In their regular-season finale Tuesday afternoon, the Norwich Women's Soccer team made history against Mitchell in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play. The Cadets potted nine goals for the first time since 2018 and had their most significant margin of victory since 2012.
 Right from the opening kickoff, Norwich dominated possession, notching six shot attempts and four corners before breaking the ice in the 17
th minute. After collecting a ball deflected off a Mariner defender,
Heidi Smith (Sammamish, Wash.) took possession, dribbled into the box through the defense, and sent the ball over the head of Mitchell keeper Ronnie Keays to put the Cadets ahead. Fifty-three seconds later,
Maddy Perry (Fair Haven, Vt.) won the ball along the right end line and passed it off to
Lily Briggs (Fair Haven, Vt.). Briggs dribbled free of the defense and sent a shot inside the right post with her left foot to extend the lead.
Norwich kept mounting pressure and extended their lead to three in the 27
th minute when
Kat Probst (Gouverneur, N.Y.) took a pass from the back line, dribbled free, and sent a shot from the top of the box under Keays. Before the half concluded,
Zoey Lazzaro (Peterborough, N.H.) sent home the first two goals of her collegiate career, making it a 5-0 margin at the break. In the first half, Norwich tallied 22 shot attempts, with half of them on goal, and added five corner kicks.
In the opening minutes of the second half,
Jasmine Hackman (Clear Brook, Va.) sent the ball to a streaking Perry in the box, who slid it by Keays for the sixth goal in the 48
th minute. In the 62
nd minute, Perry set up
Antonia Pellon (Pownal, Vt.) for a tap-in.
Bella Roy (Weare, N.H.) sent a shot off the crossbar and down in the 83
rd minute, and Probst rounded out the scoring in the last five minutes, capping off a five-point effort.
The Cadets dominated possession, finishing with a 40-7 margin in shot attempts, with 22 going on target, with
Michaela Dubey (Belchertown, Mass.) and
Hannah Jenkins (Manchester, N.H.) combining for the clean sheet.
With the win, Norwich secures a place in the GNAC Tournament. Their opponent in the Quarterfinals, along with the time, is to be announced, with the contest slated for Saturday, Nov. 1.
