Men's Soccer: Hassan Strikes as Cadets Draw with Saints

BOSTON, Mass.- The Norwich Men's Soccer team completed its three-game road through the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) with a stop at Emmanuel on Wednesday night, where the Cadets and Saints played to a draw.

Emmanuel held the edge throughout the first half, but Tyler Ziminski (Huntington, N.Y.) and the rest of the Norwich backline kept the Saints off the scoresheet. Of their five shots, one hit the target, and Ziminski answered the bell.

Following the halftime break, the Cadets had their first offensive chances, earning their first corner, and Nick DePeppe (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Gabriel Cantarero (Annapolis, Md.) took two early shots towards Owen Silva. Soon after, in the 53rd minute, the Saints took the first lead of the contest with Luis Pimental finding the top right corner.

Despite conceding the goal, Norwich continued to press, eventually leading to the equalizer. After a Diego Fuentes (Valencia, Spain) chance misfired, the Cadets earned a corner. Fuentes sent the ball into the box from the right corner, where, out of the chaos, Sharmarke Hassan (Burlington, Vt.) found the back of the net, tying the game in the 67th minute with his first collegiate goal.

The two first-year keepers took turns in shutting down the other side, with Jack Hunt (Gilbert, Ariz.) getting the Norwich chance, but the draw stood to the final whistle.

The Cadets will now return to their home turf for a three-game homestand, opening with a Parents & Family Weekend showdown with Elms at 6 p.m. on Oct. 4.
