BOSTON, Mass.- The Norwich Women's Ice Hockey team picked up their sixth straight New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) play in a 5-1 victory over UMass Boston Friday night after erupting for three goals in the third to clinch it.
The opening frame was a scoreless one, with the Cadets repeatedly testing Beacon's goaltender Veronika Hadamovsky, including being key to two successful penalty kills.
Madison Brunet (Timmins, On.) came up with the stops when called upon as Norwich took a 12-4 shot advantage to the locker room in the scoreless affair.
Two and a half minutes into the second stanza, Norwich would break the ice. While continuing to press in the offensive zone,
Rylie McIntyre (Brunswick, Maine) won possession along the end boards.
Madison Anderson (Green Bay, Wis.), stationed at the half wall, touched it back to
Neris Archambault (Pepperell, Mass.) before Archambault sent a wrist shot through traffic to the back of the net for her first of the season. After a lot of continuous action, UMass Boston tied the game after beating out an icing and confusion in their attacking zone, Emerson Homa would pot the equalizer.
After both sides exchanged penalties, the Cadets would get one more in the latter minutes of the period. After causing a turnover in the neutral zone,
Anna Lisac (Euclid, Ohio) got the puck to
Jenna Nikles (Riley, Mich.) as she gained the attacking zone. Nikles's initial opportunity was deflected by a Beacon defender, but she regained possession and buried a backhand for the eventual game winning tally and giving the Cadets the lead at second intermission.
In the third, Norwich would salt the game away by striking twice in 23 seconds. First up, after several failed clear attempts by UMass Boston,
Julia Richardson (Commerce, Mich.) jarred the puck free to Anderson who tapped it to
Taylor Girouard (Burlington, Mass.). Girouard skated to the middle and roofed a shot high to Hadamovsky's blocker side for the third goal, netting Richardson her first collegiate point.
Off the ensuing faceoff, Girouard would get the original chance which was saved,
Livia Brooks (Walpole, Mass.) attempted a wrap-around with the rebound which was also stopped. But, before the play was blown dead,
Olivia Boyer (Saint Paul, Minn.) jammed the puck home in a net mouth scramble making it a three-goal game. Three minutes later
Sophie Zemianek (St. Albans, Vt.) sprung Brooks on a breakaway cementing the 5-1 victory.
The Cadets will look to continue to roll in NEHC play when they complete their weekend series with UMass Boston Sat. Feb. 1 at 3 PM.
