BOSTON, Mass.- The Norwich Women's Ice Hockey team took home their twelfth straight New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) win with their sixth shutout in their last seven contests by taking down UMass Boston Saturday afternoon for Head Coach
Sophie Leclerc Doherty's 100
th win as the bench boss.
"I had no idea I was already at 100 wins," Doherty said. "It feels like yesterday that I embarked on this journey as Head coach at NU. It truly means the world to reach this milestone at my alma mater surrounded by incredible players and coaches who have been there along the way."
The Cadets waisted no time in finding the back of the net. After losing the opening draw,
Neris Archambault (Pepperell, Mass.) jarred the puck loose from a board battle before
Lauren Tuzik (Frankfort, Ill.) sprung
Livia Brooks (Walpole, Mass.) and
Olivia Boyer (Saint Paul, Minn.) on an odd man rush with Brooks gaining possession. Brooks maneuvered passed the defender then got a shot off on Beacon goaltender Leah Bosch that she got a piece of, but the puck trickled home anyway giving Norwich the lead 19 seconds in. The two sides traded flurries with Bosch and
Leocadia Clark (Stowe, Vt.) making stops. Both sides went to the penalty box late, but it remained a one goal game at intermission with the Cadets holding a 10-5 shot edge.
An early powerplay in the second gave Norwich the momentum in the second, which carried over after it was killed off. With the Cadets continuing to mount pressure, they would extend their lead late.
Taylor Girouard (Burlington, Mass.) intercepted an outlet pass and immediately took a shot towards Bosch that was saved, but Brooks was on the doorstep to pot the rebound extending the lead to two just before the break.
Norwich would continue to press to open the third and would add one more. After Clark shut down a Jenna Fitzsimmons chance,
Anna Lisac (Euclid, Ohio) countered with a rush into the attacking zone. Lisac went around two Beacon defenders before sending a shot passed Bosch to make it a three-goal game. Several powerplays late yielded no results leading the score to stand giving Clark her 25
th career shutout, one short of the career program record.
After concluding the road portion of their schedule, the Cadets will close out their regular season with four straight at home starting with a matchup against Salem State Feb. 7 at 4 PM to kick off two straight weekends of men's/women's doubleheaders inside Kreitzberg Arena.
