NORTHFIELD, Vt.- The Norwich Women's Ice Hockey team secured their fifth consecutive shutout victory Saturday afternoon when they shut down New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) rival Southern Maine 5-0 during their 'Cadets Fight Cancer' promotion.
The Cadets picked up right where they left off after last night's victory and poured the pressure on Husky netminder Haley McKim and held USM without a shot towards
Leocadia Clark (Stowe, Vt.) until eight minutes in. Seconds later, Norwich jumped ahead.
Livia Brooks (Walpole, Mass.) gained the zone with a head of steam before putting on the breaks at the end boards before passing along the boards to the right half wall to
Marja Linzbichler (Graz, Austria). Linzbichler centered it to
Taylor Girouard (Burlington, Mass.) who wristed it by McKim for her second straight game winning goal, and the first of three helpers on the day for Linzbichler.
In the waning minutes of the opening stanza, Linzbichler would get her second assist of the contest as Norwich extended their lead. She intercepted a Husky pass in the neutral zone before finding Brooks on the left boards. Having the USM defenders hypnotized, Brooks maneuvered around them as she entered the attacking zone and potted her team leading tenth goal of the season.
It was a parade to the penalty box throughout the middle frame, starting with both sides trading unsuccessful power plays before the two teams skated four aside and eventually a five-on-three for the Cadets where they would convert. McKim made the original save on a
Jordan Brady (Green Bay, Wis.) shot before
Olivia Boyer (Saint Paul, Minn.) tapped it over to
Anna Lisac (Euclid, Ohio) who jammed it home pushing the Norwich lead to three. The two teams stayed at five-on-five briefly as USM returned to the sin bin in the final minute in a period where the Cadets outshot the Huskies 21-2, ten of which came on their four power plays of the period.
While shorthanded to open the third, USM got their best opportunity of the game on a shorthanded breakaway, but Clark made the save. The Huskies would take two more early penalties, the latter of which resulted in Norwich's second tally with the man advantage of the game.
Jenna Nikles (Riley, Mich.) had the puck behind the goal line before finding Lisac at the circle. Lisac passed it off to Brady at the right point for a wrist shot through traffic for the goal. With seven minutes left,
Lauren Tuzik (Frankfort, Ill.) jumpstarted a rush with a pass to Linzbichler who then worked her way around the net before finding Nikels in front for the fifth and final goal of the contest.
The Cadets will continue NEHC play when they hit the road for the final time during the regular season when they travel to UMass Boston to open a weekend doubleheader Jan. 31 at 6 PM.
