NORTHFIELD, Vt.- After being on the road for the last two weeks, the Norwich Women's Ice Hockey team returned to Kreitzberg Arena where they recorded their fourth straight shutout, this one of the 1-0 variety against Southern Maine Friday night.
After a bumpy start, the Huskies got the first high danger scoring chance of the night with a breakaway by Ally Stymiest that was shut down by
Madison Brunet (Timmins, On.). Eventually, the Cadets would press the attack but USM's Haley McKim, along with strong defensive play by both sides, kept the game scoreless after twenty minutes.
In the early minutes of the second period, Norwich would break through.
Livia Brooks (Walpole, Mass.) jarred the puck loose from a board battle which was collected by
Lauren Tuzik (Frankfort, Ill.). Tuzik passed it off the defense partner
Neris Archambault (Pepperell, Mass.) who sent a home run pass to a streaking
Taylor Girouard (Burlington, Mass.) on a breakaway where she would beat McKim for the game's lone goal. Soon after, the Cadets got back-to-back powerplay opportunities, neither of which yielded results.
Late in the frame, the Huskies earned two straight man advantages of their own, one of which carried over into the third and with similar results.
Once they finished off the penalty kill, Norwich put their foot on the gas pedal in the final stanza keeping the Huskies from setting up as they sought the tie.
Anna Lisac (Euclid, Ohio) had numerous chances on the doorstep, but McKim denied her keeping it a one score game. The Cadet pressure in the offensive zone in the waning minutes kept USM from getting an extra attacker out and cemented the win, and Brunet's third shutout in as many starts.
The Cadets and Huskies will close out their weekend series Saturday afternoon at 3 PM when Norwich hosts 'Cadets Fight Cancer' night in conjunction with the American Cancer Society.
