NEW HAVEN, Conn.- In their first ever matchup against Albertus Magnus, the Norwich Women's Ice Hockey team lit the lamp seven times en route to their third straight shutout victory. In the effort, four different players recorded multiple points, highlighted by a hat trick and a helper for sophomore winger
Livia Brooks (Walpole, Mass.).
After a scoreless first period, where the Cadets held a decided territorial advantage posting a 19-5 total in shots on goal, the floodgates opened early in the middle frame. Brooks would rifle home a wrist shot from the slot off a
Marja Linzbichler (Graz, Austria) faceoff win to break the ice.
Norwich kept the momentum alive, adding to their barrage of Albertus goaltender Christmas Johnson, before extending their advantage to two. A double team of
Lauren Tuzik (Frankfort, Ill.) and
Anna Lisac (Euclid, Ohio) jarred the puck loose off a Falcon attacker's stick as she was heading toward
Leocadia Clark's (Stowe, Vt.) crease. Lisac poked the puck loose to
Breanna Ricker (Laconia, N.H.) who hit Brooks in stride on a home run pass for a goal on a breakaway. The maroon and gold would make it a three-goal game on the man advantage. After exchanging passes at the top of the attacking zone,
Olivia King (Old Town, Maine) took a pass from
Jordan Brady (Green Bay, Wis.) and put it towards Johnson, who made the original stop, but
Olivia Boyer (Saint Paul, Minn.) cleaned up the loose change in front of the net.
Early in the third, Brooks would score on another breakaway with the two teams skating four aside to complete the hat trick. Just before the halfway point,
Alex Leslie (Irishtown, New Brunswick) sprung an odd man rush feeding
Taylor Girouard (Burlington, Mass.) pushing the lead to five, and spelling the end of Johnson's day between the pipes. In the last five minutes, Boyer would bury a rebound of a
Jenna Nikles (Riley, Mich.) chance, and Linzbichler would also score bringing the final margin to 7-0, in a contest where the Cadets outshot the Falcons 71-16. In the end, Brooks, Boyer (two goals), King (three assists), Linzbichler (goal and assist), and Brady (two assists) notched multiple points, while Clark shut the door for her 23
rd career shutout in Head Coach
Sophie Leclerc Doherty's 95
th career win behind the bench.
It will be a quick turnaround for the Cadets and Falcons who will complete their weekend series Saturday morning Jan. 18 at 11 AM.
