Women's Soccer: Cadets Stun Panthers Behind Briggs's Late Goal

NORTHFIELD, Vt.- As they hit the halfway point of their extended homestand, the Norwich Women's Soccer team prevailed in dramatic fashion Wednesday night in their non-conference matchup with Plymouth State with first year Lily Briggs (Fair Haven, Vt.) scoring the game winner for Norwich's first ever win over the Panthers.

In the first matchup between these two programs since 2016, the Panthers looked to test Hannah Jenkins (Manchester, N.H.) in her first collegiate start, but were kept out of scoring range. As the early minutes rolled on, Norwich started to turn the tide and would eventually break through. A shot from just outside the box by Colby Magoon (Loudon, N.H.) was blocked by a Plymouth defender. As the Panthers attempted to clear the ball out of danger, it found the right foot of Harley Murphy (Guyton, Ga.) on the left side of the box. Murphy sent the ball to the top right corner to give Norwich the early lead.

The goal gave the Cadets life, as they would continue to dominate in possession. Panther keeper Christa Giansiracusa would make three saves to preserve the one goal deficit at the half in a period in which Norwich held a 7-3 shot advantage and took both corner kicks.

The two sides traded scoring chances to open the second half, eventually Plymouth would take over the possession advantage. In the 71st minute, the Panthers were awarded two consecutive corners. After Jenkins shut down the first opportunity, the second one eventually knotted the contest with Olivia Howard finding the back of the net amid mass chaos.

After the goal, the Cadets would go on the offensive with several golden opportunities and would find their breakthrough late. From a throw in by Abby Kirrane (Lunenburg, Mass.), Kat Probst (Gouverneur, N.Y.) would take the ball along the end line, before passing it to Briggs, who was camped out in front. Briggs would send the ball along the turf from her right foot to the bottom left corner for the eventual game winning goal.

Norwich will return to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play Saturday afternoon when they continue their homestand against Simmons at 1 PM.
