Men's Lacrosse: Cadets tame Pride in regular season closer, clinch North Division's second-seed in GNAC Tournament

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University men's lacrosse team broke a 4-all stalemate and rattled off 13-straight goals en route to collecting an 18-7 win over Regis College in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) regular-season finale on Sabine Field on Wednesday evening.

The win clinches the #2 seed in the North Division for the Cadets ahead of the GNAC Tournament, earning Norwich the right to host third-seeded Lasell University in the GNAC Quarterfinals.

Christian Rainis (Wynantskill, N.Y.) spearheaded Norwich's explosive offense, sniping in four goals to lead all scorers.  Duncan Youngclaus (Middleboro, Mass.) and Mitchell McKay (Lynnfield, Mass.) drilled in a pair of hat tricks.  At the same time, Drew Fleury (Nashua, N.H.), Tyler Seidel (Centreville, Md.), and Alex Johnston (Franklin, Tenn.) also recorded multiple goals with two apiece.  Jack Haley (Falkville, Ala.) and James Raymond (Tracy's Landing, Md.) rounded out the offensive onslaught with goals.

The Pride kicked off the day on a Nick Klein tally and again controlled the lead minutes later despite Haley knotting the score at 1-all, courtesy of an Anthony Marsella goal.  This set in motion a three-goal spurt from the Cadets in 57 seconds from shots from Rainis, Johnston, and McKay.

Regis put two more on the board before the end of the first frame, sending both teams into the second period tied at 4-4.  The Cadets proceeded to amass four unanswered goals throughout the second before pouring in nine more in the third to claim a 17-4 advantage heading into the final 15 minutes.

McKay added an insurance goal in the closing frame, capping off a masterful offensive display despite three goals from Regis in the fourth stanza.

The Cadets could not be stopped offensively, taking 46 shots to 23 for the Pride, while also corralling 58 ground balls and holding Regis to just 19 ground balls.

Thomas Muraski (Keller, Texas) was unstoppable, going 21-22 on face-offs and scooping up a game-high 17 ground balls.  Norwich controlled 25 face-offs for the game, allowing just three victories for the Pride.

Thomas Hopkins (Chelmsford, Mass.) earned the win between the pipes, making nine saves in 45 minutes.  Mason Dils (Watervliet, N.Y.) was also impressive in the crease, logging a save in 15 minutes.

The defense was anchored by Mason McMahon (Norwich, Conn.) and McKay, as both led the team in caused turnovers with two apiece.

Norwich will now look ahead to the GNAC Quarterfinals and a date with #3S Lasell, as the Cadets hope to avenge a 10-5 loss to the Lasers in Newton, Mass., back on Apr. 9.  Gametime for the GNAC Quarterfinals is to be determined.
