NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University men's lacrosse team's 2024 season came to an abrupt close on Saturday night, as the #2N Cadets fell to #3S Lasell University, 15-6, in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament Quarterfinals on Sabine Field.
Six different Cadets supplied the six Norwich goals, as
Drew Fleury (Nashua, N.H.), Tyler Seidel (Centreville, Md.), Chris Smith (Dawsonville, Ga.), Alex Johnston (Franklin, Tenn.), Christian Rainis (Wynantskill, N.Y.), and
Mitchell McKay (Lynnfield, Mass.) all found openings past Lasell's stalwart goalie.
The Lasell offense exploded out of the gates, accumulating three goals in the opening five minutes before Fleury ended Norwich's scoreless stretch 10 minutes into the contest.
Another three-goal run by the Lasers followed, again halted by a Cadet goal when Johnston responded on a man-up opportunity. Norwich found some momentum throughout the second, as McKay kept Norwich within three, 7-4, but the Lasers strung together another run, this time building an 11-4 advantage a little into the third period.
Back-to-back man-up goals from Seidel and Rainis trimmed Lasell's lead back down to five, but the visitors' defense stood firm, keeping Norwich scoreless the rest of the way en route to upending the Cadets on their home turf.
The Cadets outshot Lasell, 43-41, while successfully converting on three extra man opportunities.
Gavin Youngclaus (Middleboro, Mass.) anchored a Norwich defense that generated 17 Lasell turnovers, as Youngclaus forced a team-high four miscues.
Norwich concludes the 2024 season with an 11-7 overall record and an 8-2 mark in GNAC action.
