Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball: Cadets Upended by Bulldogs

NORTHFIELD, Vt.- For the third time in four days, the Norwich baseball team took to the Garrity Field diamond for Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action for a doubleheader with Dean.

The Bulldogs struck first in the first game, plating three runs in the first, but the Cadets would respond with two in the second. An inning that opened with back-to-back base hits for Isaac Maldonado (Miami, Fla.) and Jakob Hayes (Arlington, Texas). Hayes would swipe second putting both runners in scoring position for Tyler Callahan (Arlington, Mass.) who popped up to the first baseman in foul territory. After completing the catch, his momentum carried him out of play allowing the runners to advance, bringing Maldonado home and putting Hayes on third. Hayes would come home courtesy of a Jon Ringer (Cupertino, Calif.) safety squeeze to close the deficit to one.

After Dean extended their advantage to three in the top of the third, Norwich would respond in the home half opening with Kevin Ohlsen (Shirley, N.Y.) eating a hit by pitch and an infield single by John O'Connor (Southington, Conn.) setting the table. Ohlsen would come around to score on an RBI single by Brock Carpenter (East Berlin, Pa.), while O'Connor would be driven in by Maldonado. After that, Hayes would bring home Carpenter with a pop up to shallow right that was hauled in by the second baseman to tie the game.

The game would remain tied at five through the end of the seventh, both teams plated runs in the eighth to bring it down to the wire. The Bulldogs broke the deadlock in the ninth scoring two runs. After consecutive base hits and a walk, the tying run would go into scoring position but was ruled the final out of the game after leaving the base early on a sacrifice fly and clinching a victory for the Bulldogs.

After the first three innings of game two were scoreless, Dean took the lead in the fourth and never looked back shutting down Norwich. The Cadets will have a quick turnaround when they visit Vermont State Lyndon Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 PM.
