LYNDONVILLE, Vt.- The Norwich baseball team suited up for their seventh contest in the last four days when they hit the road to Vermon State Lyndon Wednesday afternoon.
The Cadets came out of the gate with a five run first, all coming after the first two batters were retired. The three-hole hitter,
Geffen Franus (Leesburg, Va.), notched a single to center before swiping both second and third. After a
Brock Carpenter (East Berlin, Pa.) walk put runners on the corners, local product
Trevor Lussier (Lyndonville, Vt.) brought home Franus with a single to open the scoring. Lussier and Carpenter would successfully pull off a double steal before Carpenter came home on a wild pitch, putting Lussier on third. Next, a free pass was issued to
Jakob Hayes (Arlington, Texas) before him and Lussier came home on a double by
Joe Grygent (Cataumet, Mass.). Â Grygent would come home on a single by
Jon Ringer (Cupertino, Calif.) to cap off the explosive frame. A Franus double, a third steal and a Carpenter sacrifice fly pushed the Norwich lead to six in the second.
The Cadet pitching staff quieted the Hornet bats in the early going, as the trio of
Matt Ingraffia (Lake Grove, N.Y.), Carson Rath (Glens Falls, N.Y.), and
Kaiden Quinn (Swanton, Vt.) combined to allow only two hits in the first four innings with no walks and five strikeouts. After Lyndon plated three unearned runs in the fifth, the Norwich dominance on the mound continued with
James Campbell (Havertown, Pa.), Nick Beavin (Montpelier, Vt.), and
Jordan Talbot (Belchertown, Mass.) combined to allow one hit in the ladder five innings.
To give themselves some breathing room down the stretch, the Cadets would scratch across another run with
Owen Silk (North Haven, Conn.) doubling in
Tyler O'Neill (Danvers, Mass.) in the sixth. For further insurance runs,
Michael Sabasteanski (Ashburn, Va.) would come home via a bases loaded hit by pitch, and
Tyler Callahan (Arlington, Mass.) would score on a
Kevin Ohlsen (Shirley, N.Y.) sacrifice fly in the ninth to stretch the lead to 9-3. Lyndonville's Lussier finished the day a perfect three for three, while Franus went two for five with two runs scored and three stolen bases.
Norwich will return to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play Saturday when they travel to New England College at 12 PM.
