NORTHFIELD, Vt.- The Norwich baseball team took to the Garrity Field diamond once again Sunday afternoon for doubleheader action with Lasell.
The Lasers struck first in game one, jumping out to a four-run lead after the road half of the fifth. The Cadets would respond with two runs of their own in the home half of the inning, starting with leadoff man
Kevin Ohlsen (Shirley, N.Y.) driving home
Jon Ringer (Cupertino, Calif.) with a single through the left side of the infield. Ohlsen would later come home courtesy of
Brock Carpenter (East Berlin, Pa.) to draw within two.
Despite the advantage, the Laser bats were mostly held in check by
Nick Beavin (Montpelier, Vt.) who allowed two earned runs in five innings of work. However, the Lasell bats would awaken as they would score 13 more runs to bring game one to an early end.
The Norwich bats would bring the rain in game two. After the Lasers got on the board in the first, the Cadets immediately answered in the home half starting with
John O'Connor (Southington, Conn.) splitting the left center field gap for a double. Eventually, the bases would be loaded after a walk and a dropped fly ball in left field.
Jakob Hayes (Arlington, Texas) would draw a free pass, bringing O'Connor home to tie the contest. The following batter,
Michael Sabasteanski (Ashburn, Va.), would single to right bringing home two more runners to give the Cadets the early lead.
The following inning, the Cadets would keep their foot on the gas with three straight base hits for
Nolan Knight (Altona, N.Y.),
Dillan Garza (San Antonio, Texas) and O'Connor which loaded the bases for
Geffen Franus (Leesburg, Va.). Franus deposited a pitch over the left field fence for a grand slam, his second homer of the campaign to open the flood gates and put Norwich up by six.
After the Lasers closed the gap to four, Norwich would pad their lead in the fourth with Hayes bringing home Franus with a double down the left field line. Hayes, and
Ethan Aube (Riverhead, N.Y.) would be brought home by Sabasteanski, who would later come home on a sacrifice fly. Lasell scored once more before the game was called off early due to weather conditions cementing an 11-4 Cadet win earning
James Campbell (Havertown, Pa.) his first collegiate win.
The Cadets will host their third doubleheader in four days Tuesday afternoon when the take on Dean starting at 1 PM.
