NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University men's lacrosse team scooped up another dominant Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory on Saturday afternoon, taking down Anna Maria College, 15-6, in a North Divisional bout on Sabine Field.
Drew Fleury (Nashua, N.H.) paced the way with another impressive offensive performance, drilling in four goals.Â
Christian Rainis (Wynantskill, N.Y.) logged another hat trick with three goals, while
Tyler Seidel (Centreville, Md.) and
Mitchell McKay (Lynnfield, Mass.) rounded out the multi-goal scorers with two apiece.Â
Jackson Forbes (Merrimack, N.H.),
Nicholas Wolfgang (New Port Richey, Fla.),
Alex Johnston (Franklin, Tenn.), and
Case MacDonald (Burke, Va.) added a goal each.
Forbes opened the offensive onslaught quickly, as Rainis found him just 46 seconds into the contest to snipe one in behind Caden Rakes in net. Seidel provided an unassisted goal just minutes later before the AMCATS responded on a man-up opportunity at the six-minute mark. Fleury snagged the first of his four to close the opening period.
Fleury drilled another just seconds out of the gates, spurring six-straight scores by the Cadets to kick off the second stanza. Although Anna Maria tallied the final goal of the half and swiftly got two more in the third, the Cadets always had an answer. Fleury earned an assist on a Rainis score out of halftime, while Seidel, Rainis, and Fleury combined for three in a row to extend Norwich's lead, 13-4, to conclude the third.
The two teams exchanged man-up goals before Wolfgang granted the Cadets their largest lead of 10, 15-5, with 8:30 remaining in the contest. Anna Maria got one back halfway through, but any attempt at a comeback was thwarted by stalwart play between the pipes and Norwich's strong defensive presence.
The Cadets generated constant opportunities, garnering double-digit shot opportunities in all four periods, finishing with 49 for the game. Norwich won 14 face-offs while corralling a dominant 54 ground balls to just 36 for the AMCATS.
Clayton Cisar (Aberdeen, Md.) and
Gavin Youngclaus (Middleboro, Mass.) each had strong defensive presences, causing three turnovers each to lead all players.Â
Thomas Muraski (Keller, Texas) registered nine ground balls to also lead both teams.
Thomas Hopkins (Chelmsford, Mass.) earned the win after a strong 30 minutes in front of the nylon during the first half, allowing just two goals while making eight saves.Â
Thomas Kelliher (Shrewsbury, Mass.) also had a stellar showing, logging seven saves in a full 30 minutes during the second half.
Norwich will return to the field on Wednesday, Mar. 20, hosting Dean College in a 4:00 p.m. conference clash on Sabine Field. The Cadets then travel to Albertus Magnus College on Saturday, Mar. 23, for another GNAC bout.
