Men's Lacrosse: Norwich drops conference nail-biter to Bulldogs

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University men's lacrosse team saw its two-game winning streak snapped in a 13-9 loss to Dean College on Sabine Field in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Wednesday evening.

Five Cadets registered goals, with Drew Fleury (Nashua, N.H.) pacing the way behind a hat trick and an assist.  Tyler Seidel (Centreville, Md.) and Mitchell McKay (Lynnfield, Mass.) added two goals apiece, while Matt Meehan (Norfolk, Mass.) and Jack Haley (Falkville, Ala.) rounded out the scoring with a goal each.

After a scoreless stalemate for the opening seven minutes, Haley broke through the deadlock, as Christian Rainis (Wynantskill, N.Y.) found Haley at the 7:42 mark to spur a back-and-forth affair.  Diego Alvarez-Segee kicked off his three-goal afternoon with an answer just two minutes later, promptly responded to by Seidel just seconds after.

The Bulldogs ripped in two in quick succession to end the first stanza and start the second, but the Cadets again had an answer, courtesy of McKay.  The Alvarez-Segee brothers granted Dean a lead they would never relinquish, however, as Diego and Manny struck back-to-back in a 57-second span.  Norwich routinely kept within reach, trailing by just one on three different occasions.

Facing an 8-5 deficit just over a minute into the third period, Fleury commanded the Cadet offense, striking on a pair of goals to bring Norwich back within one.  However, two clutch goals in the final 12 seconds of the period halted Norwich's momentum, as the Bulldogs secured four-straight goals to retake control of the game.

Meehan and Fleury ripped in two goals to give the Cadets some life, but it was too little too late as the Bulldogs secured an insurance goal and held on for the 13-9 victory.

The Cadets scooped up 49 ground balls, while Mason McMahon (Norwich, Conn.) generated three Dean turnovers.  Thomas Hopkins (Chelmsford, Mass.) recorded 23 saves in the crease in a full 60 minutes of action.  Rainis handed out a game-high four assists.

Norwich will now hit the road for four-straight, first traveling to Albertus Magnus College on Saturday, Mar. 23, for a 3:00 p.m. tilt.  The Cadets then travel to Vermont State University Castleton for the Connor Roberts Memorial Game on Wednesday, Mar. 27, scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
