WINTHROP, Mass. - The end-of-year honors for the Norwich University men's cross country team continue to roll in, as fourth-year Head Coach
Michael McGrane was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Coach of the Year while the program was honored with the league's Institutional Sportsmanship award, as announced by the league office on Thursday afternoon.
The 2024 season was a dominant showing for the Cadets, who claimed their 12th-ever GNAC Championship after topping reigning conference champions Saint Joseph's College of Maine and five other scoring competitors this past Saturday afternoon.Â
Matheu Dettenrieder (Tribes Hill, N.Y.) hauled in five GNAC Rookie of the Week nods en route to finishing as the top individual freshman at the championship meet, earning GNAC Rookie of the Year after crossing the line in 27:48.9 to come in fifth.
Seth Varin (Danielson, Conn.) and
Landon Pandolph (Peru, N.Y.), in addition to Dettenrieder, all landed on the GNAC All-Conference First Team, while
Judson Nash (Boerne, Texas),
Jacob Reed (Thompson, Conn.),
Leo Circosta (Greensboro, Vt.), and
Kyle Duffek (Chandler, Ariz.) received GNAC All-Conference Second Team recognition after Saturday's race.
McGrane's honor marks the second of his tenure with the Cadets, after receiving similar plaudits in 2022 when the Cadets won the GNAC Championship. Norwich logged a dominant 30 points, 27 points ahead of Saint Joseph's (Maine), to capture the title on their home course.
Andre Knapp (Northborough, Maine) was named as Norwich's representative on the men's All-Sportsmanship Team, while
Cece Winters (Waco, Texas) was the women's team's selection for the All-Sportsmanship Team.
The 2024 campaign saw impressive showings at several meets this season, as the Cadets took home four first-place team titles, including at the VTSU Castleton Invitational, the Founding Tree Invitational, the Norwich Cadet Invitational, and the GNAC Championship.
The Cadets will return to action at the NCAA Div. III Mideast Regional Championship, hosted by Connecticut College in Waterford, Conn., on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 12:00 p.m.
