Women's Ice Hockey: Nikles's Scores Late as Cadets Clip Seahawks

MIDDLETOWN, R.I.- A late flurry of goals for the Norwich Women's Ice Hockey team lifted them over Salve Regina Friday night in the first meeting between the two squads since Jan. 27, 2018.

In the first six and a half minutes of action, the Cadets held a decided territorial edge outshooting the Seahawks 6-1. Salve Regina would eventually answer with a flurry of their own, including an unsuccessful power play with Leocadia Clark (Stowe, Vt.) being equal to the task. After the penalty kill, Norwich continued to press but came up empty with Taylor Hannafan making 12 saves in the period to keep the game scoreless at the break.

Out of the locker room, the Seahawks had several opportunities that Clark shut down. On a counterattack, Norwich had a golden opportunity to break through but instead found the crossbar.  After the two sides traded penalties, Norwich would go to a powerplay that generated chances but was unsuccessful. Minutes later, the Seahawks would get a man advantage of their own and cash in. In the dying seconds of the power play, Emma Pereira would skate the puck across the blueline to the left circle and put a wrist shot top shelf to give Salve the lead at the end of two.

The Seahawks rode that momentum into the third where they held the upper hand after an early power play. However, the Cadets would answer. Gritty board play by Livia Brooks (Walpole, Mass.) jarred the puck loose to Rylie McIntyre (Brunswick, Maine). McIntyre continued to work along the boards before centering the puck to Olivia Boyer (Saint Paul, Minn.) at the goal mouth for the equalizer just passed the halfway mark of the third.

Four minutes later, Norwich would take the lead. The original point shot from Olivia King (Old Town, Maine) was blocked down into traffic. Amid the chaos, after the puck deflected off Anna Lisac (Euclid, Ohio), Libby Lane (Northville, Mich.) slid the puck across the crease to Jenna Nikles (Riley, Mich.) who put the puck in the yawning cage for the eventual game winning goal. After weathering a Norwich power play, the Seahawks went to one of their own in the dying seconds, but Clark shut the door preserving the 2-1 win.

The Cadets will round out their weekend double header at Salve Regina on Nov. 16 at 3 PM.
