NORTHFIELD, Vt.- The Norwich Women's Soccer team closed out their six game homestand in style Friday night when they extended Mitchell's winless season on the back of three different goal scorers.
Off the opening kickoff, the Cadets had the Mariners on their heels keeping them pinned in their defensive half of the field. Within the first eight minutes of action, Norwich attempted four shots, with three of them going on target. In the 11
th minute, the Cadets were awarded an indirect kick in the box after a dangerous play by the Mariners.
Lindsey Duggan (Belmont, N.H.) touched the ball to
Kat Probst (Gouverneur, N.Y.) whose shot went through all 11 Mariners crowding the goal to give Norwich the early lead. The Cadets continued to press the attack, but the one goal lead would stand at halftime with the maroon and gold holding a 13-0 shot advantage.
Norwich continued to press in the second half and extend their lead early in the frame. Off a throw in, Probst touched the ball along to
Bella Roy (Weare, N.H.) before sending the ball towards the middle for Duggan who hammered a ball to the middle of the net from 19 yards out to double the Cadet lead. Minutes later, a corner sent in by Duggan pinballed around the box. A Mitchell clearance attempt careened off
Harleigh Cornellier (Tyngsboro, Mass.) and into the goal, pushing the lead to three where it would stand.
Both Probst and
Harley Murphy (Guyton, Ga.) generated five shot attempts, with both Duggan and Probst getting a goal and an assist each in a game where Norwich outshot the Mariners 22-1, 11-0 on goal and held 66% of possession, most of which was in the attacking end.
After the lengthy homestand, the Cadets will hit the road to Lasell for a 4 PM kickoff on Oct.9.
