NORTHFIELD, Vt.- In their penultimate home game of the season, the Norwich Women's Soccer team hosted Colby-Sawyer as they celebrated the impending graduating class Wednesday night.
Eight minutes in, the Chargers got the first chance of the contest. During this time, a collision occurred involving starting goalkeeper
Michaela Dubey (Belchertown, Mass.) who was briefly removed from the game, but returned five minutes later. During that timeframe, Norwich broke the ice. A free kick was awarded on the right side of the field 25 yards from the goal,
Kat Probst (Gouverneur, N.Y.) took the set piece and directly sent the ball under the crossbar with her left foot to put the home team ahead.
The two sides traded chances back-and-forth in a battle between two team jockeying for position in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) standings. Late in the period, Colby-Sawyer answered with a long shot from Sam Bishop to tie the game in the 40
th minute. Three minutes later, the Cadets were awarded their first corner of the game.
Lindsey Duggan (Belmont, N.H.) sent it in where the foot of
Abby Kirrane (Lunenburg, Mass.) would find the ball in mid air before entering the net for Kirrane's first career goal which gave Norwich the halftime lead.
Just over three minutes into the second half, Bishop connected for her second of the game to once again tie things up. Halfway through the frame,
Abby Bruce (Peru, N.Y.) was fouled in the box by Charger netminder Gabriela Calidonio, leading to a penalty kick in addition to a red card issued to the Colby-Sawyer coach who disagreed with the ruling. Duggan took the kick, sending a shot to the bottom right corner freezing Calidonio to become the program record holder for converted penalty kicks in a career.
The back-and-forth battle raged on for the rest of the second half as the Cadets were clinging to their advantage. In the dying minutes, after a yellow card was issued, the Chargers took a free kick. As it went towards the goal it glanced off defenders and went into the net tying the game at three where the score would stand at the buzzer.
Norwich will round out the home portion of their schedule Saturday afternoon Oct. 19 when they take on Elms at 1 PM.
