SALEM, Mass.- After a gritty, hard fought victory over Southern Maine the day before, the Norwich Women's Ice Hockey team continued their road trip with a stop at Salem State in a game that would not be as dramatic as the one the night before.
Within the first three minutes of the contest, the Cadets had already posted six shots on goal with the seventh shot finding its way to the back of the net with
Emma Morel (Tournon, France) netting her first goal of the season. Thirty seconds later, the Vikings would get on the stat sheet with their first two shots towards
Madison Brunet (Timmins, On.). After coincidental minors were served, Norwich pressed the attack even more, which was fueled by a contact to the head major in the last five minutes of the period.
Off a faceoff win,
Taylor Girouard (Burlington, Mass.) would send the puck to the point for
Lauren Tuzik (Frankfort, Ill.). Tuzik's original wrist shot was stopped by Cassandra Valentine, but
Jenna Nikles (Riley, Mich.) put home the rebound to extend the lead with 23 seconds left in the period. A few seconds later, Salem State would take a tripping minor leaving Norwich with a 5-on-3 with a clean sheet of ice while outshooting the Vikings 25-4.
The remainder of the five-minute major was killed off by the Vikings early in the second. When it returned to the standard 5-on-4, the Cadets pushed their lead to three. With time and space at the top of the offensive zone,
Neris Archambault (Pepperell, Mass.) and
Madison Anderson (Green Bay, Wis.) played catch with each other, before Anderson sent a cross ice pass to
Livia Brooks (Walpole, Mass.) who wristed the puck from the right faceoff circle passed Valentine.
Seven minutes later, Brooks added her second of the game. Nikles forced a turnover as Salem State was looking to exit the zone, poking the puck to Anderson. Anderson moved around the defenders and got below the goal line before centering the puck to Brooks, who made a move around Valentine for her second of the game. At the halfway point, Norwich would get another powerplay where they would convert again. The original shot by
Aimee Headland (Nottingham, U.K.) was blocked down, which came to Girouard at the net mouth. Girouard's attempt came loose in the crease and was eventually jammed home by
Olivia Boyer (Saint Paul, Minn.). The second period would end with the Cadets holding a commanding 5-0 lead, to go along with a shot advantage of 18-6 in the frame, 41-10 in total.
In the third period, Brooks and Anderson would add two more goals each, with Brooks adding Norwich's fourth powerplay goal of the game for the ninth and final tally. The goal capped off a four goal, five-point, effort while Anderson's two late goals gave her four points on the day. In goal, Brunet stopped all 14 shots for her second shutout of the season.
"I thought the girls played hard, and it was nice to see our special teams have some success," Head Coach
Sophie Leclerc Doherty said. "I am happy to see our young players find the back of the net. They are a ton of fun to watch, and we are looking forward to getting back to work before hitting the road."
The next stop on the road for Norwich is a trip to Elmira for the third clash of the season with the Soaring Eagles on Jan 12 at 6 PM.
